S4 Auto Fuel Consumption

Hi, I am thinking of buying an S4 as a hobby and will probably only do 2-3000 miles a year, having had a 5.3 XJS (12mpg) the fuel consumtion is a bit of a concern to me. I will be mainly doing runs at weekends in light traffic, I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what consumption I can expect.
Thanks Jerry

Hi,

I have a S4 1987 which i have owned for around 18months. I had simular concerns but was surprised on how efficient a 5L V8 was. I have the anolog dash which doesn't give fuel consumption details like the post 89 s4 models with a digital dash but i am getting around 24mpg. Obviously if you drive hard this will be in the low teens and if you drive very steady this could get even higher. When you do 70mph the V8 is only just ticking over. It worth understanding though the 928 have big fuel tanks and it is fairly expensive filling up.

Just a little note i only use standard unleaded fuel. I did do a little research in the super unleaded but was put off by a few forums suggesting this could damage the fuel pump and engine so i didn't think it was worth the risk.

Thanks

Hi,

I don't know about the S4, but the GTS must be quite close even with the 5.4l engine (mine is an Auto also). I had mine for 4 years now and first of all it depends on how you drive. As mentioned by barkda motorway driving is better but my view is that if consumption is a concern I wouldn't buy a 928, although 2000-3000 miles per year - you could consider it as a treat! I do use 99 octane fuel (from Tesco!) - I would certainly be interested to see the suggestions (referred to by barkda) that it could cause damage.

Finally - the 928 driving experience is just superb.
all the best

If you rally it ... about 1 mile per litre (yes 4.5 mpg) ..... on a run (same car) - 25 / 26mpg
