Sadly.....keyed

My pride and joy was keyed at the weekend. About 18 inches, quite deep across the passenger door and rear quarter.[]

Clearly I'm seriously saddened and after some deliberation, am seeking to have it repaired as it takes some of the magic away knowing it's not perfect. Anyway, I'm planning on using Chipsaway. It turns out, though, that Chipsaway use more than one treatment and not all the technicians can employ all of them. The first one I called turned it down flat. He said he couldn't do it because "there was no shadow line to blend in to, silver (arctic) is a hard colour to match, and it's a Porsche". However, I then phoned their 0845 number and was put through to their Bracknell franchisee. He was very helpful and we had a long chat. He could do it (had the appropriate qualifications and materials) and no problem with the lacquer/colour, apart from because it's a relatively large area, said it was more suited to a franchisee with dedicated premises so it could be treated indoors. He recommended Steve at Acre Road in Reading, who was again very helpful, and said "no problem". He is booked up for the next 5 weeks and apparently does a lot of Aston's.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but does anybody have any experience or opinions to share?

Sorry to hear that - hope you get it fixed to your satisfaction.

Someone reversed into my pride and joy last week and I today had a quote to repair what seems like a relatively minor, albeit deep, scratch on the front bumper - £500 !!!! I'm probably going to get it done though, as I can't enjoy cleaning the car with that blemish on the front !!

I'm going to the approved Porsche bodyshop which I'm guessing makes it much more expensive than Chipsaway, but I didn't want to take the risk that it wouldn't be perfect. Having said that, my previous experiences with Chipsaway have been very positive.

Good luck with getting your car sorted !

Don't assume that just because it's a Porsche approved bodyshop it will end up perfect. I've used Chipsaway three times already and have usually done a very good job. I've used a Porsche approved bodyshop once and they sent a drunk driver to pick up my car, and the paint job was very poor with visible swirl marks, with laquer all over my tyres and overspray and masking tape still left on the car.[]

Julio, just to say very sorry to hear the news, there are some mindless ars* h**es about, hope it all works out as ok as possible & those responsible get properly "sorted"!

Would seen reasonable to use the specialist as recommended. I've used chipsaway twice, parking mark on the A3 came out beautifully, but a fairly average job on the disco where it was keyed on the main door - he was just a straight forward come to your house chap. I think he was hampered by the wind - getting an even sray was difficult. Agree re comments re approved body shops - has a merc that had to go back three times to get a satisfactory finish at the approved body shop. let us know how you get on.

That's exactly what the Bracknell guy said i.e. because it's a relatively large area, doing it outdoors could cause spray problems. I just appreciated his honesty!

But I have used Chipsaway before successfully on a Beemer that I previously owned, so fingers crossed.

Fair comment, but of it isn't perfect, they'll be doing it again until it is................!!!

Sorry to hear this horrid news...this would make me sick...hope it goes well.
Chipsaway...very good, use them all the time. Good luck

firstly sorry to learn about your misfortune [:'(]
IMHO the quality of Chipsaway is variable dependent on the franchise; if I was in your situation I would go down the Porsche approved route mainly for the ability to seek redress if it doesn't turn out as you want (ie perfect). Rodney doesn't say if he got the job put right, hopefully he did, which if he did supports my point, if not ......well you pays your money and takes your chance.
hope you get it sorted.

I was in the process of selling the car, and the Approved bodyshop would not have been able to rectify it soon enough. I asked the buyer if he wanted it re-doing, he wasn't bothered (he didn't even test drive the car!), so that was that.

Although Andrew is right, if they do make a hash of it, they should rectify it, but that could take a long time, as they are usually very busy. I don't believe you have no form of redress if a Chipsaway job isn't perfect.

It's fair to say that the quality of any job at any bodyshop will reflect the experience and ability of the individual carrying out the work. I have some respect for the decision of the first 2 Chipsaway guys who turned it down, and I did explain to the third guy their reservations and he was confident that he could do a good job.

I'll post an update when the work has been completed - 7/7, that was the earliest he could do the job!

It turns out that the original quote of £500-£550 excluded VAT, so the actual cost would have been closer to £650 for a relatively minor scuff.

I've decided to get a touch up pen from the dealer and see if I can improve the situation before spending that kind of cash!!

I hope your repair goes well....

Gents - had my vandal scratches repaired by Steve at Chipsaway in Reading yesterday, and as promised, I'm reporting back.

Anyway, he has done an absolutely fantastic job - it is perfect! I have looked as closely as I can, from different angles and in different lights and it is absolutely spot on, to my eye at least.

Steve is a good bloke too, very helpful, explained exactly what they did. I have no hesitation in recommending him. I just hope I don't have to see him again too soon!

What did chipsaway charge. I have a small scratch on rear near side wing and am considering the treatment.

Please, can we have the full contact details for Steve at Chipsaway, Reading: full name, telephone number and address. It's always useful to have a proven fixer's details - just in case they're needed!

The above 3 questions in turn, yes I do have "before" pictures but no "after" pictures yet. They're too big to upload but if anybody wants to see them, drop me an email. Trust me, it is perfect. If anybody wants to inspect it, I live in Marlow and work in Bracknell and am happy to receive an inspection.

He charged me £270 + Vat and that included a scratch at the back of the near side rear wheel arch that I hadn't actually spotted myself (he did call me before repairing that too, which I thought was courteous). That was after a 10% discount that PCGB members receive so would have been £300 obviously.

Contact details are all on www.chipsawayreading.co.uk

He also had an '05 Carrera S silver convertible in too on Friday, as well as a Boxter (dark blue I think). Was it you?! His diary is absolutely chocca, and it seemed he had Aston's in every day from the dealership around the corner.

I can promise you, I have never met the bloke before, I'm just a bit old fashioned and appreciate good, courteous service and a professional job!
