Sagging suspension! Help!

I jet washed the wheel arches yesterday as I got attacked by a salt lorry (drove past almost on the hard shoulder but still got plastered) and as I haven't done this for ages I hadn't noticed that on the o/s the rear tyre is level with the lower edge of the wheel arch but on the n/s I can get about three fingers between the gap. I noticed as I couldn't get the pressure washer under ont hat side but could the other. I haven't been able to look to see what the problem is but does anyone have any ideas? Could it be the shocks? Springs on their way?
Car is an 89 2.7 on S2 wheels
 
That's a relief. I'll take a look in haynes. Need to replace some bits on the back soon anyway so I'll do it all together. Any ideas why is happens?
 
Kev, I believe it's because the basic chassis was designed back in the 70's using slide rules and pencils, way before CadCam was invented.

Both mine have a much tighter gap between the tyre and arch on the offside, compared with the nearside, which is much roomier.
 
I can't believe it is a normal thing that the car left the factory like that?! It hasn't had any rear end shunts etc and the chassis is straight. How would they be able to get it that wrong?! It is a porsche after all! Plus it is a difference of about 20mm which, looking back at some piccies of the car, seems to have gotten slightly worse. Any others had this problem then or am I completely wrong?
 
Mine is about level height wise, but off side-to-side by about half an inch, i.e. the wall of the nearside tyre is that much closer to its wheel arch than the offside. It's the same story at the front. Apparantly this is normal on 944s of our vintage. Supposedly the later cars (not sure how much later) are more symmetrical.
 
They are all like that. The chassis pickup points are accurate, the sheet metal work to cover it all is not.
 
Yep 20mm is about the size of it.

It really highlights it when you put 255 rubber (or wider) on the rear
 
left / right in / out distance is failry common, I would of thought a height distance would be down to a weakening torsion bar or moved or badly adjusted height adjuster though.

The factory procedure for setting heigh specifically states not to use the wheelarch, so that has to be for a reason; they aren't all the same.
