Sale Advice

So after 6 enjoyable years the time to let has arrived. Need some advice on pricing, I see that for 1997 2.5 the market rate looks to be about 5k. Mine I feel has a crazy amount of updates and due to age and cost I see it may appeal to the younger want to be Porsche owners. I'm putting its value at 7.5k just wanted to find out if that's being realistic at all, as 7.5k buys you a 1999, 2000 model.

Black with Black Leather
Think 83k
Early history is all Porsche, then Porsche Indy and last 2 years my local who is a Boxster owner himself
I have a folder of receipts from birth
Most recently new coil packs, and both bank sensors.
I have owed it the last 6 years never been tracked, previous owners mostly Doctors/Dentists
Conditions is excellent, inside and paintwork (most folk don't know the year even Indy's think its a 2002/4 due to updates)

Extras/Updates
Electric Recline
White Dials
Cruise Control
Computer
Sun Visors
Wind Deflector
CD Tray
Useless drinks holder
Has a tracker installed although I have never activated it, but paperwork is there.
3 spoke steering wheel with limited edition silver badge
£2,000 ICE system, includes full double din Pioneer touch screen/sat nav/Bluetooth/iPod/USB/DVD/SD Card, custom Jenhert speakers custom for Boxster, has 2 6.5 speakers in each door, and dash mid and tweeter, made in the same finish as the car so looks as if it was a factory option. Powered via an Alpine amplifier, Professionally installed. All Receipts.
Hood is 1 year old and has glass window with defrost option
Front headlights updated to clear
Side indicator lights updated to clear
Rear brake lights updated to newer clear
18" turbo 2 alloys with Michelin Pilots all round 5-6mm (Gio-Tracked)

Known Issue (its 16 years old, it's gonna have some)
1 - condensation in certain weather when left out, although found recently leaving 2 dehumidifier bags works wonders.
2 - starter motor screeches 50% of the time on start, had this for 4 years, was told by my Indy they can clean up the starter but not cure it, replace for a new starter or leave it as it will never break anyway, obviously I done the latter.

Thank god I can use the above for my sale advertisement :)

That's all folks, so am I being optimistic at wanting far above the market price for a standard boxster of this age?

On a side note, huge thanks to this forum, great info and very very helpful people especially Richard and Nick who are always on the case. I do hope to be back here again, but for now I will be out of the Porsche world, see how long I can resist.

Not very realistic I'm afraid.

First impressions aren't going to be good if the starter motor makes a horrible noise.

I'd have thought you'd be lucky to get £5k as a private sale - possibly a slight premium for the ICE but how many people care about that or are willing to pay a lot for it?

You should get the issues addressed, they may not be serious at all.
1) Could be leaky door membrane or blocked drainage channels (is it wet under one of the doors or under the passenger seat?)
2) The screeching could be the Polyrib belt coming off? Check the water pump etc.

I don't see who would buy it if it was screeching like that or damp inside, you're limiting your market.

I agree with the others. As soon as I heard that starter motor I would say goodbye.

5k feels criminal :)

Its not damp on one side, its condensation that occurs on the inside of the windscreen, the floor etc is dry.

Making me feel like a part-ex is the easier way to go, seems ashame.

Oh and may be my non business head, but all the issues I said above I would disclose those in the ad, may be cutting my sale market but I don't feel right selling cars with hidden secrets, so I don't expect anyone to walk off on the stater as they would be informed prior to visit.

Best thing to do is see what you get bid on part ex - my bet would be 3.5 to 4. Dealer might try it at 6k? (but I bet he wouldn't get that)

These days £5k gets you a 986S in a private sale. Great value for buyers...

Why not advertise the car at your dream price (leaves lots of room to negotiate) and if you don't manage to find a like minded buyer you can always go the px route as a plan B [&o]

OK, the starter motor is a simple fix - an hour or two spent fixing it and it will be fine, this is simply a gummed up pinion, remove the starter, wash the pinion with petrol and remove all the swarf, let it dry - dont lubricate with anything and refit.
The swarf is simply clutch dust that has built up on the pinion and causes a jam so the pinion doesnt retract properly after starter engagement.

The value of your car - I think you are experiencing what is known as the "halo effect" your car is worth more because you have owned it, for 7.5K a 3.2 2002 is well within reach and even possible to get a facelift model (2003) with a little work.

I would think about 4.5 to 5K will be pushing it but you may get lucky

Reality Checked :)

I think part-x may be my best option as there a chance I am going to buy new, so I am sure I can get them to swing a good number to make the sale happen.

Possibly it is 'halo effect' but I tell you it's almost criminal :)

I spoke to a dealer yesterday about PX'ing my '97 tiptronic in against a 2001 996 Carrera 4.

Mine has just had new rear discs and pads, (Bosch), new plugs and coil packs (Bosch), new tyres, coolant, oil and filters and is quite a sorted car now (107k) and he offerd me £2400 for it and said he may be able to squeeze it up to £2700 at a push!

I think I'll stick with the Boxster!

HIKES.

Come on man the mention of 4.5-5k was bad enough, now you just plain scaring me.

With all the info, it looks to me like I need to get 5k from the dealer and not because the car is worth that but because he wants the new car deal and probably is just offsetting with other discounts. Although I have got 15% off the list price currently without showing the part-x, I'd like to hit 20% before putting the part-x on the table.

What are part ex ing for ?? 20% seems good for a new 981

I wish, no it's a different direction, a very heavily loaded BMW 123d convertibile. I know far too sensible :)

Good work, your old car sold already? BTW, what discount did you get from the dealer? Cheers.

See you sold it, well done.

My daughter has started looking for an under 75k mile Boxster and with a budget of £3-4k , I am amazed she has found loads, some would be an expensive lesson as need maintenance work, that shoud have been done, but quite a few have low miles and with good service history at £4k .i find used cars really drop in price after 5 years, so either now you keep them or change every 3 . I wonder what my 981s that cost me £65k will be worth in 3 years......... I bet £30k if lucky :(

Many Ferrari boys get a worse deal, they don't use them, pay man £ to service them and then finds deprecation steps in, at least Porsche are generally less expensive to run!
