Santa Pod today

Having tuned the car, I was itching to find out how it performed on the track. A quick trawl of the web came up with Santa Pod's Run What You Brung day today. Irresistible!

I arrived at 11.30am, joined the queue and signed in.

There was a wide selection of machinery, from full on drag cars testing for next weekend to loads of Saxos, Minis, Scoobies and more modest machines. I felt suitably humbled when I saw this yellow 944 running a small block Chevy plus supercharger and getting low 10's.

Anyway, the moment of truth soon arrived and I blew it. I didn't realise how fast the lights would go to green and was caught napping. An eon off boost before any fun but at least I managed a run without frying the clutch or buggering up the gear box!

The numbers say it all:

1.2 secs to get moving
10.7 secs for 1/8 mile at 73.3mph
15.8 secs for 1/4 mile at 98.6mph

The car ran well and was clearly capable of mid 14sec 1/4 mile. Sadly, that was not to be.[&o]

Although I really enjoyed the experience of running the 1/4 mile strip, the organisation at Santa Pod left me wanting to scream. I arrived at 11.30am. Joined the queue straight away and finally got a run at 1.20pm. I immediately rejoined the queue and at 3.30pm it started to rain before I got my second run[] The staff at Santa Pod seem to take a veeerryyy looonnngg lunch.[] Information is scarce and bikers seem to jump straight to the head of the queue.[]

Having said all that, I'm keen to have another go, maybe arriving early this time to avoid the crowds. Anyone care to join me there Sunday 2nd September?

Uh oh, are you about to start the UK 944 1/4 mile challenge [:D] [;)]

A similar race has been running on Rennlist recently with three main protagonists (and a stock of driveshafts) trying to get a 944 Turbo into the 11's []. Here are the leaders:

I went to a watch a 'Run what you Brung' at Santa Pod a few years ago and they are now so popular that you are really lucky to get two runs in a day. Brett in the 928 forum is organising a PCGB day later this year if he can get enough numbers (50 minimum), send him an email to put your name on the list, there are only a few of us so far

Yep a UK 944 1/4 mile challenge sounds fun [;)]

I would be happy to get mine into the 14's and walk away without a fried clutch, broken driveshaft or stripped gearbox !

You're right about the crowds - I hadn't thought that it would be that busy - an early arrival looks vital if you want to get more than 1 or 2 runs.

I wouldn't mind joining you when I get my car back from the bodyshop (probably not in tme for 2nd Sept though ). Santa Pod is only 30 mins away and I'd be happy to get there early and leave before lunch if it got busy .

At least with dragstrips I wouldn't need mindblowing brakes :ROFLMAO:
