Saratoga Sunroof - Bulk-Buy

Chaps,

Tom (944Fripp on here) is a very clever chap and he has been looking into having a batch of Saratoga Sunroofs for 944's made. For those who don't know, the Saratoga Sunroof was an optional 944 extra, available from your friendly local Porsche dealer back in the 1980's and 1990's when you bought the car. I don't know how much they cost then but can only imagine that they were painfully expensive. Not many were made and hence they are rare things nowadays. They are a tinted glass sunroof panel that is a slot-in replacement for the existing plastic panel that almost all 944's have. Being glass, they allow much more light into the car. Being tinted, and made by Pilkington (who are very smart people), they won't make your car into a high-speed roasting oven when the sun shines (although if they were then an S2 roasting oven would be faster than a Turbo roasting oven.) If you want to know more then have a look at the Rennlist forum where they had something similar done a few years ago. Start at Page 52:

http://rennlist.com/forum...oga-tops-again-52.html

Pilkington Glass made the originals and they will be re-doing a short production run. Prices (inc. VAT, but excluding delivery of £25) are as follows;

1 off: £457.87
10+: £432.04
15+: £418.27

You will probably be allowed to collect for free from the Pilkington works where they are made, most likely to be Huddersfield.

I understand (but will double-check to confirm) that these are the design to fit the later 944's with electric sunrooves (not the earlier, manual-roof cars.) They will also fit 968's. They are being produced in a batch so the more people who are interested, the cheaper the price will be. If you are interested then please add your name to the list below. Putting your name down isn't an absolute commitment but I'd rather you only did so if you are genuinely keen to buy - i.e. don't put your name down if you are simply interested in hearing more, or may think about it in the future, or would like one but can't really afford it etc etc etc! If the order goes ahead then you will be asked to pay for your roof up-front and will be kept informed as the production happens. (This will be a strict rule; you will need to pay, in full , in advance, and there will be no refund if you change your mind.)

List of people interested is thus:

1. zcacogp (Oli).
2. 944Fripp (Tom).
3. ALZ 1933 (Alan).
4. 944Scott (Scott).

I have pm'd my intention to be added to the list, only issue being grey car so wold like to see tinting options. I don't think brown/orange will work.

Sutters,

Thanks for the PM. I think there will only be the one option in terms of tint colour, and I share your concerns (my S2 is Baltic Blue). However have a read of the rennlist thread and look at the pictures on there; it seems that the colour of the tint is hardly noticable and it looks good on pretty much all colours (including grey and blue).

The list is now thus. If anyone else wants to add their names then please copy this list into your post and add your name, thanks.

might be a silly question but will this come as a simple plug and play or are we expected to remove/exchange fixings with the existing hard block roof panel?

All plug and play. Confirmed that it is the updated fittings that keep the seel good and tight too.

Helpful bunch this Pilkington lot! They forwarded me a completely separate enquiry he has had for one and has suggested we add it to our order so we could have an extra one from outside the forum. As soon as he confirms I'll add his name to the list.

Between that, 968uk owners signing up on here and on TIPEC, you're doing a grand job, just wish I still had my coupe.

One thought crossed my mind - with the normal panel there's a wind deflector that fits inside the front of the panel - useful when you drive with the panel out. How does this work with the Saratoga, is the front slotted to take the wind deflector?

I'm assuming it is too. I've been reassured by a couple of people that it's a plug and play for my S2 so should be fine for any 86> 944's. People have also adapted them for manual roofs too.

You might want to confirm that with Pilkington's..reason I say this is when you look at the roof shown on eBay I can't see the wind deflector...you can't see anything in the interior shot due to the cage getting in the way but the exterior shot which looks towards the front I would have expected to be able to see the deflector through the glass. I can't see one, perhaps others can?

Pete

Just to confirm it will be a straight swop for my early square dash 944 sunroof, it is electrically operated

Cheers

When you talk about the eBay ad, do you mean this one?

[link=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/saratoga-sunroof-porsche-944-968-rare-/252275411774?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=d1An7Hn3yFAXIauXJbycq7GAs4I%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc]http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/saratoga-sunroof-porsche-944-968-rare-/252275411774?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=d1An7Hn3yFAXIauXJbycq7GAs4I%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc[/link]

If so then I think I can see what's going on. If you look at this picture:

$_57.JPG

... you can see that the two mounting points on the front of the roof (bottom of picture) are long and designed to extend over the wind deflector, as is the trigger finger for the sunroof present/absent switch in the middle (by the label). If you look at the shot of the roof in the car, here:

$_57.JPG
.

... then the black strip at the front of the roof is the wind deflector, correctly jammed behind the two mounting points you saw in the last picture. Because the roof is a sheet of glass with fixings screwed onto it, as opposed to a piece of plastic with depth (as the standard roof is) then the arrangement is different, but I think I can see how it works.

I'm very happy to hear from others if you think I have misunderstood these pictures.

Oli.

Looking at the pictures on Rennlist i'd say there is not inner skin for the wind deflector to slot into, it looks to me that the Saratoga roof just sits above the wind deflector when installed. For the purpose of using this roof I'm considering removing the wind deflector as I find it near useless anyway.

Found these pictures.
