Sat Nav and Becker

Right then here we go,

I have in the car a Porsche CDR22 with the upgrade sound pack (eg through an amp not straight to speakers)

This works perfectly!

I have just purchased a Becker Traffic Pro High Speed, this unit looks exactly the same as the Porsche unit but has the addition of a GPS aerial socket at the rear of the unit.
The schematics on both units match up with each other perfectly and the existing Porsche wiring loom fitted into the Becker unit perfectly and in the same parts of the unit as the Porsche unit.

The unit powers up fine, accepts the security code, seek finds and stores radio stations, the CD element works and counts the track time track number etc.

However I have no volume at all, whether in radio or Cd mode.

The unit does show the following message "GPS aerial error"

I have a couple of questions I guess for all you HI FI experts

1. I have not yet fitted a GPS aerial would this cause the "no sound" effect.

2. If the answer to question 1 is yes then when I fit a GPS aerial where does it go, does it just sit behind the unit with all the other wiring, does it have to be mounted on the dash, or under the bonnet or in the boot, I don't really want to be drilling holes through the bulkhead or running complicated wiring.

Hope someone can help.

I've also emailed a friend I know who works at Harman Becker, however he only picks up emails in batch mode evry now and again hence my plea to the forum.

I don't know about the volume, but the (correct) GPS antenna fits under the plastic shroud on the top of the dash - at the base of the windscreen where the alarm flasher is. (This is so for 986's anyway...)

Yep, I've fitted the same to my MY97 2.5 - with the Porsche Sound Pack option you need to cut one of the wires into the standard connector and resplice it into a different socket. The matter's been brought up before, and hopefully the following link will give you all the info you need. Check the link to the boxa.net thread and about halfway through that is the info on the wires to be spliced.

PCGB Trafficpro link

Agree with Mark that the antenna is best placed in the space under the alarm flasher. If you bought a new TrafficPro the antenna should have come with it; secondhand, you may need to obtain a suitable antenna elsewhere. There are instructions on Renntech of how to dismantle the alarm flasher housing to leave access to the rear of the heater controls/head unit but that was too fiddly for me. The antenna cable was long enough to route around the base of the windscreen towards the passenger side, around and under the dash and behind the head unit.

Have fun!

If i recall correctly, it is the BASS Bin (Black with red stripe) wire in the yellow connector that needs splicing to the switched ignition wire in the porsche original wiring loom.

If you have an electrical meter test all the connections for a (+v12) supply when you turn the ignition on and off on the yellow plug - you'll need to ground the - probe to some bare metal on the car. If you dont have a electrical meter, get a 12v bulb for pennies from a motor factor and stick some wires on it. It will obviously light up when you've found the correct wire.

You may have an issue with the alarm sounding a single beep when you have done this, as the car will believe that the stereo has been stolen. This really stumped me, but two mins at my local OPC and they sorted it FREE!. I [THINK] that if you look in the cage for the stereo in the car, there is a piece of bare metal that touches the case of the stereo. This needs moving/bending so it no longer touches the stereo. Alternatively, stick a piece of instulation tape on the left hand vertical side of the stereo to isolate this connection.

Good call on the alarm bit [:)]

Look on the original unit for a piece of plastic which is stuck to the case - this needs to be replicated on the replacement (as said, insulation tape is ideal).
Bending the contact out of the way would work - but then you lose the security part of it.
