Has anyone used a DVD cleaning disc in their say nav drive? I am getting an intermittent problem with it not recognising the DVD. All was fine until I removed it for some stupid reason and I am wondering if a clean might be a good idea?

Good suggestion but no luck! It is now no longer intermittent and it does not seem to be able to load/identify the DVD? Everything else works fine so I guess it is the drive in the boot that needs a fettle. Has anyone any experience of http://www.mapleaudio.co.uk in Bath - they seem to repair these things?
I just had same issue on my BMW X5. Apparently the Gel around the head dries out and causes a read error as it can't align properly. My BMW is around 6 years old, so this looks like the lifespan on av. miles car. I sourced and replaced the drive myself - via instructions on you tube on how to take out of dash and stick the new module in.
You may find similar instructions for PCM - I quickly found this video, which takes the module out of the dash

This listing on ebay is for the a DVD drive for Porsche and is like the one in my BMW. Its a simple module to change.

Although the cheapest and efficient company I found for the DVD drives was www.navigatie-onderdelen.nl
If the part number in this ebay listing photo is correct for PCM you have, CDM M6 4.5/52, then look at this link below where they are Euro 77

Its quite straight forward just a few torx screws and ribbon cables.
Hope this helps if this is the issue.
Cleaning did not work for me.
The alternative is a repair from Porsche ££££££ or a sat nav repair company who look for around £250 to supply and change the DVD out.

Clive - really good post thank you. You have given me a direction to go in and I will have a surf around and see if I can get a unit for the DVD drive in my 2005 C2S. The unit is actually in the boot above the CD auto changer - hopefully I have managed to upload a photo of it.
I think I still need to have a go with a DVD cleaner before I go unscrewing things - was the one you tried just an off the shelf type?

Fingers crossed this seems to have been solved by Swindon OPC where the car has just been for a bit of work today. They 'reset' the sat nav and it seems to be working now - yes I am holding my breath! It was interested to know from them that if these units go wrong they do sometimes send them to 'a place in Bath' for repair - depending on the fault - I suspect it is Maple Audio (http://www.mapleaudio.co.uk) so that might be useful to know. Also, in my Googling around for people who repair these things I can across Revtronic who have a pretty good and informative website - http://revtronic.com/?portfolio=porsche-997-navigation-repair-pcm-1.
Hope this helps if you end up with a similar or more catastrophic problem.
