Sat Nav Glitch

At present sat nav thinks car is in the middle of the Solent, yesterday in the middle of Poole harbour, ( just been around Sandbanks for a week ) but the day before that, in the middle of some field near Sandy, Beds. First thought it was down to the GPS but now think its probably the discs freezing up. Going into NAVI / STATUS there is no GPS information re. number of satellites locked into. However when sat nav does work briefly this information is still absent. If anyone has a minute to check this page and let me know what info you have. I do have the upgrade but not phone module. Then we will get down to local OPC.
Thanks.

Good luck with the OPC, I'm sure the Sat Nav will be working perfectly when you drop it off!

Sounds like you have similar problems to mine. Occasionaly mine would freeze during a trip, the map would move up with travel but the car position would just disapear off the screen as the miles went on. Also quite often got DVD unreadable error and other times just a blank screen mid trip with position unobtainable or someting like that. It never seemed to happen when the passive map was being displayed only when the navigation system was active. Have to say it is a major bug in the car and very annoying.

Just got a lot of shoulder shrugs at OPC.

sounds like the antenna connection to me;
the car is detecting that it's moving, just has the wrong location.
Mine did the same, briefly !
OPC diagnosed a wind noise issue, & in doing so didn't re-connect the antenna under the cowl - local RAC windcsreens who fixed the wind noise problem re-connected the antenna & hey presto - all was fine.

Mine froze once in the middle of a journey but after shutdown & restart has been ok ever since! The OPC shrugged their shoulders - just one of those things sir!

Is it possible that the DVD is dirty?

I've found that the CD player is very fussy, and often has problems reading CDs that are not perfectly clean

CDs that play on my CD player at home often skip / jump on the CD player in the car, but work perfectly well after they have been cleaned

Sat Nav now fixed, a failed GPS sensor. Not the most reliable of electric components on the car I'm told and, like light bulbs, NOT covered by extended warranty. So Hubertus not a happy bunny. Cut a long story short, Porsche, as a good will gesture, reduced the ÂŁ300.00 bill by two thirds. So not going back to an M3 just yet.

Its shocking to hear that the GPS sensor is not covered [:'(]

However, It does make it a slightly easier pill to swallow with the good will.

Did any one find a DIY fix for this?

I have cleaned the DVD...no change

I have had my car for six weeks, the sat nav thought it was some where else a couple of weeks back but sorted itself after leaving the car overnight. It now thinks it's in Manchester and won't seem to fix itself after three days of being in Nottingham

Thx

Has anyone found a way of down loading safety camera data onto the Porsche system. I still have to carry my Tom Tom in the C4S to warn me.

Sorry, I'm not aware of any... I'm in a similar situation myself..

I am aware though that it would then make the PCM illegal in various countries throughout Europe, so certainly not in Porsches best interests to let it be done.

I don't if the systems are the same but my BMW does this from time to time. Like many computerised things a good reset (by which I mean disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes) solves the problem immediately.

One of my friends has downloaded the information onto a copy of his BMW navigation DVD. The cameras come up on the screen as points of interest like petrol stations or restaurants.

Presumably the same principles must be able to be applied to the Porsche system.

BMW use the navteq disk as do Porsche, however the two systems are different, so the maps are not interchangeable. It would be interesting to hear if the speed camera data was just added to the file containing POI or if the disk needed to be re configured afterwards. What site did he get the speed camera data from ?

i have to say that the sat nav on my 997s is the worst example i have ever experienced as a manufacturers model....it doesnt have half the roads in my local area that have been around for a seriosly long time...also, why cant u just imput a postcode??

thats great many tks for the tip..although i get to the point with it that i tend to use the tom tom the wife bought me!

No problem, i think it was one of those tips that never ended up in the manual but was discovered on trial and error. [8|]
