SAT NAV help please

Hi, I've just bought a 3.6 997 Carrera 54 plate, the dealer told me it was missing the sat nav disc, However now I've become more familiar with the car I've noticed that there is no navi computer in the boot, so I called the dealer and he said the I can just put the disc into the cd slot in the cabin and it will work. If anyone knows if this is correct I'd really appreciate it. and if this isn't the case if anyone knows if I can buy the parts to put sat nav onto my car and what these parts are??

thanks in advance for any help.

Ant.

P.S. I should say that this isn't in any way putting me off the car it's just I've got used to just having sat nav!! and I am absolutely made up with the car!!!!

Interesting, in the 997's I have had post 06, they have the sat nav dvd disc in the boot at the front and the dvd sits in there permanently, so no reason to ever remove it, loose it or change it. the fact that its 'missing' sounds wrong.

I am not convinced therefore with the dealer suggested solution, it sounds as if your car doesnt have satnav fitted but no doubt someone here will prove me wrong, I hope for your sake

Same here.

I suggest you ask for a partial refund on the basis that the dealer has mis-represented the car he sold you. However, I wouldn't use any money you may be fortunate enough to recover to fund fitment of the Porsche sat nav - better to buy a TomTom and pocket the difference.

Hi Ant, from your description there's no sat-nav in that car. Navigation cars have a tissue-box-sized DVD drive under the bonnet, in the letter-box compartment forward of the battery. The CD-drive in the stereo is just for that, CD's. I take it you've been nowhere near a Porsche dealership, but I'm sure they'd be able to confirm from the VIN number or a visual inspection.

Retro-fit is possible, around 2k from a Porsche centre. You'd need the DVD drive, the GPS aerial, the fibre-optic plumbing and the re-programming of the PCM system.

I can't advise what steps to take with the suppling dealer if he advertised/described the car as with Sat-Nav. However I do agree with Snarf, I wouldn't bother with fitting Porsche navigation as a tom tom has far better and more accurate functionality.

If I remember rightly it was the previous 996 model which borrowed the CD slot for the satnav disc.

I agree with Snarf/Robert that a 3rd party satnav could well be preferable over any sort of retro-fit, especially with frequent map updates, and at a fraction of the price.

I have a 2005 car ( without satnav ) and seem to remember they had a CD and not DVD system. . Is it possible it can use the single slot? They don't play Mp3's either.

The PCM is fitted to the Carrera S as standard as well as the turbo I beleive, but without the navigation drive. The PCM can also be fitted as an optional upgrade to other 997 models, again with or without navigation. The navigation drive that takes the map DVD is always external to the PCM , it sits in the front trunk either in a vertical caddy next to the bulkhead or horizontally under the plastic cover in front of the battery compartment. If you have an early PCM it is possible you will not only require the DVD drive, cage , fixings , fibre optic cables and GPS reciever , but also a new map and PCM software update. I wouldn't expect you to get much change from 1000 pounds for the hardware alone. The Map DVD and software you will require is at least 350 on its own. If you venture into buying second hand you must be careful with compatability of the DVD drive with your PCM, you will also require an update of the PCM to be able to use the latest maps.

I thought the PCM display is standard on all 997 's. The Nav and Tel modules are sperate and costly.
If you were sold a car with Nav and it doesn't have it I would be going mental !
I am pretty confident in saying that a DVD Nav disc won't work in your CD slot and as others have said there is other hardware such as the GPS reciever.

you would be right all new generation cars as porsche put them 9x7 were all on dvd drive for sat nav and have never used the pcm unit cd slot for sat nav..

if you have sat nav it would be located out of sight under the front bonnet behind the black cover to the your right as you look at the brake fluid cover..

if someone had removed it the whole audio system would have shut down to silence due to a break in the optics, have a look where it should be for an orange wire if not there then it has not been fit .
