Sat Nav in Car

Anyone recommend an in-car sat nav system, i have 2 head units with cd changers; kenwood and blaupunkt. So i wouldn' t mind changing the head unit to one of the makes so long as the changer wasn' t wasted. Can anyone tell me if Blaupunkt sat nav or kenwood sat nav are any good, if not which would they recommend, and at what cost?

Gareth, I have the Alpine DVD navigation system in my 944 Turbo. I have used it for over 2 years and have just updated the DVD to latest 2.30 version and added the TMC traffic interface. I can thoroughly recommend it, although it won' t work with either of your changer units [&:].

Take a look on my website www.cannell.co.uk to see the installation.

I have also used lots of others over the years, including the Garmin Colourpilot systems. I have a colour one to mount in the 944S, but can' t find a suitable place yet.

Gareth, sorry forgot to mention - coverage of southern Ireland. Although it now appears on latest 2.3 DVD, coverage is very limited - mainly Dublin.

Worth checking map mcoverage areas before looking too deeply ...[&:]

Hi Gareth,

I' m also based in Dublin, and interested in Sat Nav.

At the moment I have a Palm with a GPS Navman device and maps of Europe that work with it. It has the advantage that I can use it with any car, e.g., while renting abroad, or even walking through a strange town, but is not very good for providing directions while driving.

I am eagerly awaiting a new device by Garmin http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/# that is a PDA with integrated GPS, much better screen resolution, colour maps, and voice guidance, and lots of memory. I believe the maps for Ireland will include Dublin, Cork, Galway, and main routes.

IMO if you want PDA functionality with Sat-Nav convenience, then the HP Ipaq with either Nav-Man GPS outer jacket, or Bluetooth a GPS works the best. Both Navman http://www.palmtop.nl/ce/mapsonline.html and TomTom http://www.palmtop.nl/ce/mapsonline.html provide very good voice navigation as well as moving map options.

For a dashmounted Sat-Nav, I have the Becker Traffic-Pro which is the same as the Porsche badged after market Sat-Nav, and is voice directions only.

I' ve been using the iPAQ with the iPAQ Navigation System for 18 months now. I' d literally be lost without it.

It works well (if a little quiet) and once you replace the stupid sucker mount with a proper bracket to suit your car (so you don' t need to drill holes but also it doesn' t fall off) and route the power cable neatly it' s pretty good.
