My Mates 997 which is about 2 years old I think. His Sat Nav has just packed up. The bit inthe boot area. It was not covered under the extended warantee and he had to stump up the money which I though was shocking when the car is so new.. £1300

But I have to say that Porsche did say they would pay for the part if he paid for the labour.. Which is better but still shocking when it has been used about 5 times!!! ever..

£1300!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the DVD player. Now the good news, his bill will be a very small proportion since the unit is plug-in and will only take a few minutes to install. Can't wait to hear what the final bill turns out to be. Make sure your mate is aware of the true labour costs.

Probably charge an hour minimum. Best if he collects the part from the Parts Dept. and fits it himself.

They have said it will be £200 which I still think is a cheak but to be honest he knows the car will cost him and to be fair as long as it gets done then the cost is not really going to hurt him.. ( works hard gets a nice packet ) so no time to worry about money on this..just wants it fixed.. Still I am sure Porsche want or bank on customers like this..

BTW looks like he is going to sell the Porsche and buy a BMW as i think he is not happy with the serivice with such a new car. The word " Fregin liablity car " come to mind [&:] don't think he is happy...

He will only keep it for about 18months and then I think he has his eye on an A/Martin, Customer care with AM is shockingly good. like REAL good.. and that is what he wants from a top marque car..

It has to be with the number of call outs. They are well practiced. []

He has mates who have AM's and none of them have had any problems. All city boys who give them a hard time. So if they like them then that's got to be a good result for reliablity. As an Ex BMW owner I would never go back and ours was 6 months old when we got it.. and never again.. mainly the car was ok just a problem with coils and in the US BMW delt with it in the UK they did nothing except give you a bill... and do nothing.. so I sold the car and told them cee ,ya .. Bought An Audi older one and banked the BMW change, sure A4 has no street cred but at 48MPG and I can park it anywhere and it's cost like £5K I love it.. plus the extra bank balance..result all round..[]

Yes, its expensive and you're pretty much stuck with the price - although £470 is about £100 more than I've seen before.

(Assuming you do not have PCM 3 fitted to your car)

List price for the update set (997 044 902 50) is £303.53 less 10% PCGB discount = £273.18 plus VAT = £320.98

I would expect that an 08 version of the PCM and the DVD drive will not need a firmware update. So you should be able to swap the Map DVD yourself.

Secondly, sadly however much is spent on the current Porsche Sat Navs they are still not going to be "state of the art" so Chris's suggestion above is sensible if not asthetically pleasing! (And you will get a full postcode search too)
Or you could join the club and get a 10% discount........[8|]
Or there may be someone selling cheapo discs on Fleabay but I'd give them a wide berth![]

I have just been quoted £470 for an update on my sat nav!! Daylight robbery or what?!  I have an 08 turbo.  Any suggestions?

My suggestion is to drive around using the 08 discs.

Yes there will be a few updates but proportionate to the number of Roads that you actually drive on the changes will probably be too insignificant to worry about.

I have found that when you do drive on an un mapped new road it is pretty obvious what has changed and after a few miles the new bit of road joins the old road.

The Points of interest may be a fraction out of date too, but would you really care ?

Save the money and don't worry that you have not got the latest discs , which probably are out of date by the time they are for sale.

That really is daylight robbery for what is now "just" satnav. I now have a garmin 765 that I use instead of my Porsche satnav. I have it mounted with an airvent mount and only put it on when I travel away from home. the rest of the time I know I have and 'emergency' satnay stil in the car.

For long journeys the Garmin gives me speed camera detection (via pocket GPS world membership at £19.99 per year), bluetooth phone integration that works perfectly with my iphone, has traffic warnings, it transmits from a 16GB music card into it over FM and always has up to date maps. What cost the maps? £69.99 for 4 updated maps per year for the life of the Garmin. That's a bargain and the device works perfectly.

Come on Porsche - stop treating us like this - we're prepared to pay a premium but to a point - the technology you supply should be competitive rather than restrictive and behind the times.

Actually, I've always found the various generations of Porsche PCMs to be pretty good - at the time of launch, that is.

In the main, the current/latest system is really excellent.

However, what is inexcuseable is Porsches failure to support customers who have invested in their systems with affordable upgrades and updates.

Many other manufacturers do it - with numerous benefits for all concerned.

Porsche could learn a lot from some simple goodwill/PR gestures in this area.

Agreed Mike - but it STILL doesn't have full postcode facility[] which any old off-the-shelf in Halfrauds Sat Nav does have.
