sat nav

I have the chance of a Sat Nav from a 2006 997 - will it fit my 987 and what difficulties might i expect when fitting? Can anyone help?

At a guess, the very least you will need to wire through to the front boot and install the DVD drive (including supplying power), then you need the antenna under the central speaker on the top of the dash (up against the windscreen) - i assume its still hidden there on the 987 as it was on the 986. You'll need to pick up a reverse gear signal from somewhere (used to be under drivers seat). After all this you will need to get the headunit programmed in by the OPC withn the PIWIS diagnostic, and even then you might not get all the extra on board computer options offered by factory PCM.

I haven't seen this reported anywhere yet - i'd have a look on renntech.org - if its reported anywhere it will be on there.

I had a TOM TOM but some B******d smashed my passenger window and stole it from under my seat[]. Even though it wasnt on display there were the tell tale marks on the windscreen. I vowed then never to buy another 1 so I am looking for something which cant be removed!

Is the Sat Nav via the Becker Car Radio? If so you can get the updates from Becker directly amd I would expect those to be pretty upto date.

If it's an RS60 then it's a PCM 2.1, and will have partial postcodes available.

Choose the town, and try putting in the postcode like RM20 3 or CT2 8. You then have to choose the street.

PCM3 will not readily fit in the 987.1 and is very expensive. Most people that want a more upto date unit fit aftermarket instead.

For the record, I'm not a fan of the PCM3 sat nav - I've always preferred 2d to 3d, but do like the Bluetooth connectivity that it offers.

Hi Ian

Thanks for that, in that case I will leave well alone. I suppose I tend to forget its 8 years old almost and tech has come a long way. maybe they should have got someone like Gamin to design in car stuff for them but I am sure the new Boxster will be all that. I take it the I-pod tune change has to be done from the I-pod as well ?

Regards Graham

Don't fit PCM 3 fit a better aftermarket version with Bluetooth and usb, much better option. You can get the phone option with a decent FM transmitter for £20-30.

Hi, I had same problem the factory fit stuff it is very underwhelming compared to the overall car ..car is 10/10 media stuff is 1/10..lol ,if you have just got the car get to know it before jumping in with aftermarket media system.

Talking from experience and I set my heart on a head unit and found out the hard way the 8 year old stuff just will not cut it,and also be aware of alternator whine from the tweeters yes this does happen.

Also note the control units on these things are highly strung..

If I could do it all again :-

I would ask the audio fit shop to recommend a head unit to work with factory fit amp and speakers and optic connections.
Guarantee no alternator whine from tweeters when on phone call etc.
Guarantee they will use existing invisible aerial.
Consider the steering wheel controls if you have any..

Or TAKE a deep breath and ask Porsche to quote to modernise even if for the larf

...or just use a good 150 sat nav when you need it with Bluetooth connect and take no calls in the car.

Note as soon as you install after market say goodbye to Porsche warranty if you intend to get one.

These cars are absolutely brilliant if not a little bit on the high maintenance side..I usually do not have time for weekend wheels but these cars are super ace...enjoy !!!!!

Ahh yes Darren, I have that tweeter whistle to, its my first German car ever. I have been a committed Japanese car owner most of my life, if the Boxster is as reliable as my MR2 I will be well happy. Have to say so far it has been a joy to drive and friends that have been round to check it out usually start off with "now that is a thing of beauty" I think they are well put together and a clever design. Its the only car I have turned down the music to listen to the engine, smiles are what its all about. Thanks for the replys guys, much appreciated.

If you have a reasonable data allowance on your phone then you can use WAZE - a (free!!) satnav for virtually all smartphones (Android & Apple). It has live traffic info and you can still use your phone as a phone.

But you still have the sound quality of the PCM system - oh joy.

Hi Richard
That looks a nice unit, like the fact you don't need to chop wiring up. I do want to return it to stock if I ever change it. Does that unit have a custom surround suited to the Boxster. ? A pic of yours fitted would be appreciated. Regards. Graham
