Sat Navigation

I use Navman on a Compaq IpaQ handheld - excellent, especially now they have just updated the software to include postal codes. Has the advantage of the IpaQ dropping into the GPS jacket - one portable unit, so can be used when walking / on holiday etc

TomTom is also good software on the handhelds - has post codes, avoid functions etc. But, has a separate GPS aerial box on a cable, so is not so convenient for out of car use

All systems have the advantage of being able to take with you from car to car, whereas PCM / inbuilt systems obviously cannot.

I reckon you get 90% + of any factory extra system for less than quarter of the price, and more flexibility.

www.gpsw.co.uk, or www.totalgps.co.uk always have bundled deals at great prices

Alternatively, there are the Garmin systems (generally called streetpilot), which are dashmountable, but are £600 - £1000 each, and do not give you the advantage of a palm PC.

Thanks for your reply. I never thought about a hand held. I will look in to it. I do quite fancey a flip screen from the dash though!

Thanks Again

If you want to go to the other extreme, I have recently had fitted a complete Kenwood multimedia system, includes double DIN screen CD,MP3,WMA,DVD & TV Oh and SatNav. Tge navigation covers all of Europe, and has postcode selection. Pricey though at £3k for the whole shooting match.

I use tom tom navigator on an iPAQ with bluetooth and a bluetooth GPS receiver (made by fortuna), so I just toss the receiver on the dash, have a velcro strip to discretely mount the ipaq on the centre console - easy, cheap and transferrable between cars.

www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk have several bundle offers where they seem to do the software, ipaq and receiver all for approx £400 - good value if you ask me.

I use the Becker traffic pro; its great and looks totaly standard. Fits into the standard wiring with a couple of mods. 1 disk covers UK and mainland Europe.

I got mine from www.caraudiodiscount.co.uk

There is also a more upmarket one that plays MP3 and has GSM phone capabilities

I think you ought to be a little careful if you select a fitted unit. The MY03 and upwards Boxsters use the MOST bus to move information around (including audio) if you have BOSE fitted. I think (and I could be wrong) that a fitted unit would have to be MOST compatible (some of the more epxensive Becker units are).

I have a dashboard mounted unit (that just plugs into the cigarette lighter socket). It's called a Navman iCN630 - cost around 1000GBP.

Your choices are: a PDA (200-500GBP), a dash mounted unit (1000GBP), a fitted unit (1000-3000GBP) or go for PCM (total cost will be close to 4K GBP if you can find an OPC willing to undertake the work).

I can vouch for the Becker Traffic Pro Hi Speed, which looks like original equipment.

The CDR 22/23 just slips out and the new unit replaces it. You'll need the Porsche/Becker 6-Disc CD though.

I had it one fitted by Sempal for £950 inclusive of 2004 Europe-wide software.

It's better than PCM1 and, having used the latest BMW, Audi and PCM2 DVD systems, the directional instructions are as good if not more accurate.

When you come to sell the car, you can replace the original unit.

ALDI are selling a portable PDA / SatNAV for around £260. I bought one last year - excellent value and of course you can put it in any car.

I contacted Sempal and someone called me back saying that the Becker Traffic Pro units cannot be fitted to MY03 upwards Boxsters. He seemed to know what he was talking about. Does anyone have a different view on this? I am very disappointed that I cannot change the cheap and nasty CDR-23. Apparently the software within the CDR-23 is Porsche only. It is not generic Becker software. I would have been tempted to get one of the Traffic Pro units.

Unfortunately that is probably correct.

03 MY > 996 have fibre optic connections making the retro fit of any ICE very difficult. If 03 MY Boxster also has fibre optics then Sempal are correct.

Shame, Becker Traffic Pro is very good.

Oliver, you are right. It's the fibre-optic digital connection to the MOST bus that is the big problem here. Apparently, the CDR-23 (also fitted in the Cayenne by the way) comms have been customised to Porsche standards so an original Becker unit will not know how to send the sound over the MOST bus.

Apparently the BOSE is not an issue, just the output from the ICE head unit must be to Porsche specifications.
