Satnav

I have a MY00 2.7. I will be taking it to Italy later this year and am thinking of adding Satnav but am not keen on something that sticks on the windscreen and plugs into the cigarette lighter socket. Anybody had an after market solution fitted properly in their car? What was it and who did it? Thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.

I recall that this subject has been discussed recently on the US 986 Forum. A search should pull up what you need.
In my '03 I fitted an S80 Navman to a bracket in front of the CD holder and took power from C10 in the fuse box to the back of the "hold all" slot below the CD box. It looks OK and works very well, also I can change it over to my wifes car.
Enjoy Italy. We were going this year but have changed to the "States" to take advantage of our improved $.
Cheers,
Glenn

You could use a Becker traffic master pro if your car does not have can bus wiring. Can't remember the cut off for can bus. The becker unit is the same size and visually the same as the becker / Porsche cd radio fitted as standard. Fitting instructions were available on the net. Porsche also sell a becker sat nav unit rebadged for porsche which is virtually identical save for the start up screen and the cost, hence there being actual fitting instructions from Porsche themselves.

Hate to say it, but a £150 Tomtom is by far the best solution - it'll be up to date, can use in more than one car, no discs to worry about.

You could try a Pioneer AV-1 (??) but you'll be looking at £1k and you still have to overcome any can-bus wiring by using a separate aftermarket amp.

Thanks guys! All valueable coments particulalry the one about the map! Trouble is my wife spends most of her time in the car asleep - even with the roof down! I have had a look at the Tom Tom and that looks a good compromise. I have found an outfit who specialise in afetrmarket near Oxford so before making the final choice I'm going to drop in and see them. The guy I spoke to on the phone sounded as though he knew his stuff. My other suggestion, to her who must be obeyed, is that I order a new S with it already fitted. She didn't actually so no - watch this space!!!!

A decent atlas (£10) on your passengers lap will do the job.

If the job is a divorce then you are 100% correct however I don't think £10 will cover one of those

The Brodit Pro clip on the 986 cars slots into the centre console to the left of the ciggy lighter - you may find with the tomtom docked that you cannot then get the power lead into the ciggy lighter so be careful. The latest Tomtom One XL will run about 4 hrs off its own internal battery when fully charged provided you keep the screen brightness down (longer periods are possible if you use the option to turn the screen off between instructions - useful if it 10 or more miles between turns/junctions). You can recharge from mains wall socket with optional power lead overnight.

I went for a Becker indianapolis which fits straight in place for your old radio. It has uk and european sat nav, blue tooth hands free which is compatible with any mobile and all the other goodies on it. Paid around £400 for it on the web, loads of places that sell it. Took 10 mins for me to fit, just plugged in. Sat nav is excellent.

we have a tom tom go 500 you get hands free for mobile-you can use post codes
bleeps for speed cameras-and traffic light cameras
