sc oil presure gauge

Hi can anyone tell me what is wrong with my oil presure gauge?
its died, ive bought another but i dont think that is the problem, because when i put the wire to the switch to earth, the gauge dosnt go up,but when you turn on the ignition the niddle does move, so there is life there???????????, I know the pressure is fine but it would be nice to have the gauge working.
