SC versus Carrera....??

Okay firstly I don't want to start any arguements here,, more just to get some honest opinions about which the better car is for me. Personally I'm looking for a road car that has the "Classic" appeal along with some performance and usability, and oh yes nearly forgot "the noise". I have somewhere between £8k and £12k to spend. I do also have another form of daily transport.

Everyone will have a view but given the age of the cars I think it is a bit academic as it depends so much on the specific cars you compare. Handling, braking, acceleration etc can obviously vary massively depending on condition and any modifications made.

I drove a couple of 3.2 carreras for a week or so prior to buying in the end... an SC. One car was a later 3.2 with a G50 box and the other was an earlier one with a 915 box.

My SC is now a better drive than both of those 3.2's, inc the gear change although it has a 915 box. The handling was not initially better but I had a set of new front tyres a turbo track rod mod plus suspension and geometry set up.

The G50 3.2 Targa which as you know has a more powerful engine on paper than the SC did make a big show of power (wonderful noise under hard acceleration and a much more pronounced/ sensitive throttle response especially on lifting off) it was slightly but clearly harder accelerating but cross country it did not seem quicker at all as my particular SC has a better downshift and a better balance/ drive in and out of corners. However I did manage to spin it... ahem... which I have not yet managed in the SC which is a coupe (quieter and better handling IMHO). I think the later 3.2 carrera probably had the edge on my SC under braking but I suspect that the more impressive noise was just down to the cloth top and old sound proofing - the SC has a new sound proofing mat between the engine and the passenger compartment..

Personally I prefer the SC to the 3.2's I drove and found it IMHO a better developed car (it is a late 82 model and the latest of the 3.2's was a 1987 car) - now that'll get me in trouble- but what I actually did was to buy on condition whether SC or 3.2 and get the best car poss for the budget and that would be my advice to you. [:D]

Purely for the benefit of the uninformed I think Jerry's sentence ....'it is a late 82 model and the latest of the SC's was a 1987 car'......must be a typo, of course the SC model was replaced by the Carrera 3.2 in '84.

Err yes it was a tipo. Now it is editted into historee. Doh. Thanks Pete [:-]

I have to agree with the points above but the clincher from your perspective has to be your available budget. You will be hard pushed to find a decent coupe (if that is your preference) 3.2 for the budget you have. I have just helped a friend go throught the, sometimes painful, process of looking for a 911 and he had a similar amount available. All of the 3.2s at that price had 'issues', requiring that more money be spent. In the end he got a very 'sorted' SC for £11500, that will cost him little to run for some time. Go for the SC.

Have you driven them both and if so which do you prefer? If not then you should find that a good drive in both answers your question with no further help required, I think they are quite different cars and (possibly depending on your other form of daily transport) you will either go one way or t'other.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool SC fan as they just feel so much more connected to your nervous system. Had mine out on track for the first time recently at Bruntingthorpe and am still smiling. Were I in your position I would be buying a nice usable 204bhp SC for about £9.5k and spening the other two and a half on Bilsteins, turbo tie rods, Carrera tensioners, SSI's and a decent service with an SC specialist. That car would then wipe the floor with a stock 3.2 and put a smile the size of Brighton on your face every time you went out in it.

Drive them both is the first step IMO.

Passed this beauty on the way to Northampton today at Johns Motors in Fosters Booth, absolutely magnificent and would be proud to own her myself.

I am the said friend of Ian Comerford whom he helped find and (eventually) buy a car. I intiially wanted a 3.2 purely due to it being a newer car with upgraded gearbox etc. What I found was, for my money, I was getting much more car in an SC - all the 3.2s had issues of some description and never quite filled the bill. I may have been lucky in that I bought a fantastic car from a fellow club member - this machine is like new (apart from an irritating whistle).

Yeh - got on eventually, but still down as a guest (will sort). Whistle is still there, actually went away after the Brands w/e, but came back[] - thus posted thread! Still love my SC Targa, just great...............[:)]
