SC wheel options?

I'm thinking about replacing the tired looking wheels on my SC (they're the original cookie cutters!) . I'd like to stick with the "black centres and shiny rims" look as my car is very dark green and the darker wheels suit it well.

I'm considering Cup style wheels - but with black centres rather than all-over silver.
A few questions:

Which wheel size / tyre size options should I go for on an SC sport? I would fit at least sixteen inch but could be persuaded to go to 17". What has anyone else fitted without upsetting ride comfort and speedo readings too much?

Did Porsche ever produce a cup wheel with black centre, or will it be easier for me to buy the wheels and have them refurbed and finished to suit?

Many thanks.

For example, would these wheels fit my car?.....

My car currently has 215/60 R15 on the rears, and 195/65 R15 on the front.

Or should I go for original Porsche wheels rather than replicas?
Any advice would be gratefully received...

The Ebay items might be just what you are looking for Richard but you can't look for cracks from a photo. If you can find them the original Porsche items are lighter, there will be little difference on the speedo reading if you fit low profile tyres. I have 17" replicas on my SC as do many other owners and I use Kumho tyres currently which are a bargain, the ride is fine and I don't have clearance issues although some owners do, these cars were hand assembled so there can be some variance in panel fits etc. but I don't see how one cars wheel snags on full lock when another's doesn't unless there is a serious alignment issue. If you do fit them don't go too wide on the tyres at the rear as the oil pipes in the off-side wheel arch may rub on the tyre. Even with a moderately wide tyre on the back double check the clearance. I had a problem recently where an incorrectly fitted oil pipe jutted out more than it should have from the body and rubbed the rear wheel, hard to spot too apart from the burning rubber smell.

Hi Rich,

I had 17" Cup 3 replica alloys on my car when I bought it (7x17" fronts, 9x17" Rears) with the correct offsets to fit on an SC without spacers. Both the front and rear arches had been cut to avoid rubbing (not what I'd have done, but oh well) So I don't know if you always have to cut or roll the arches to fit 17's I'm sure someone here should be able to tell you.

I took the 17" Cups off my car as I prefer the look of the original black centred 16" fuchs. The ride was noticably improved by going for 16's over 17's and the steering is lighter too (although the car has 6" wide on the front at the moment with 7" wide going on instead in the next few weeks - so maybe the steering will get heavier again??)

Also the replica Cup wheels were a lot heavier than the fuchs I have replaced them with - and the tyres are more expensive to replace too...

Thanks for the help guys.

Bones - do you know what size your front and rear tyres are, just to give me something to compare against? And how wide are the rims - 7" front and 9" rear?

They are 7.5" and 9" rims fitted with Kumho 215/45 and 245/40 tyres, no mods to the body work and no rubbing. The ride seems the same to me, hard. The minus points are more tyre so in the wet drive more steadily, as one should anyway, and in parking manouvers the steering is noticeably heavier, a further minus to replicas is added unsprung weight which I'm not happy about on my lightweight project, the big plus is more rubber on a hot day equals big grins, that's almost 20" of rubber at the back!

I wonder why my arches were cut then? If they didn't need to be its a bit of a pain as they weren't cut particularly well, and adding 1/8" of metal back on will be nigh on impossible[:(] Some times I wish people would leave well enough alone!

I've no idea why it varies from car to car Dan except that some owners choose to fit tyres that are too wide and that could be problematic but the cars were hand assembled and some had variance in the panel tolerances. Your car's arch lips may have been rolled by a previous owner to accomodate much larger wheels , some people have fitted 18" rims.

Andrew,

I may be interested in your Fuchs alloys, as I'm really just looking for something to replace my old cookie cutters and the cup alloys option, refurbished with black centres and new tyres may cost a little more than I wanted to spend. Could you describe the condition of your wheels and how much you would be asking?

I'll send a message to your email address with my email contact details.
Many thanks,

Rich, This is more for general awareness, and I'm sticking with Fuchs as it happens, but someone may be interested to know that Paul Stephens are happy to make their PS Autoart wheels available on request. This gives the option of some retro style(s) wheels in traditional sizes or modern sizes for modern tyres .

Hi Rich
I have Italian made turbo replicas made by Miglia Miglia on my SC with the correct offset and no spacers. They are 225/17 front and 255/17 on the rear.
The rear never rub but the fronts needed only one side lip rolling for a short section. With hindsight I would
have gone for 215 and I'm sure they would have been perfect.
I bought them from a company called Wheelmania HERE at a great price, less than £750 including Avon tyres!!

I like the look but I know a lot of people prefer Fuchs on these cars [;)]

Just an observation, but your brakes look tiny - like saucers within a dinner plate - once you put Cup wheels on a 3.2/SC. Just one reason I don't like Cup rims on old cars. But each to their own otherwise it would be a very boring world. [:)] Just IMHO, but I think the Cup 2 rims of all the cup styles look best on 3.2s/SCs. They look lighter and more delicate than the Cup 1s or Cup 3s and suit our cars that are not burdened with the heavy looking 964 bumpers and sills.
