Scary Moment

On the whole I dont thrash the S2 because it doesnt need it but every so often I give the old girl a blast on the M55 ( nr Blackpool ) when the roads are clear, weather is fine and there are no police in sight ! eg about 3 hours ago, having a nice ample drive back hit the motorway and was enjoying the torque of the 12 year old beauty when my back tyre disintergrated at approx 95 mph ( if any officers of the law are reading I dont have a six on my keyboard so Ive had to put in 95 [;)] ) Jesus that central reservation and me almost made contact .

Prob my scariest moment of driving - needless to say a new tyre is required in the morning and the alloy needs refurbing as well [:eek:]

However nobody hurt just a little lighter in the pocket [:D]
 
Glad to hear you didn't contact with anything Chris.

It was just as well there weren't too many other cars about.
 
On reflection I got away with what could have been a disaster, when I bought the car it had Pirelli's on the front and Falken on the rear , so it was the Falken that went.

The tyre in question had about 3-4 mil left on it - going to replace the back 2 with Michelin's or Bridgestone - if I could afford it I would replace all 4 at the same time as the front two tyres are down to about 3 mil but I carnt [:mad:]

Hate to state the obvious, but all 4 tyres should really be the same make - so which have you on the front at the moment?

C'mon Mark you should be able to remember how balanced the 944 is [;)]

Ideally yes, one should have the same tyres all round, but it is not as essential with 944's as some other cars. My own currently has different makes front to rear and so does Andrew Sweetenhams 422bhp monster. Both have been driven with great gusto on track like this and it creates no adverse handling at all.

I'm wondering how old those Falkens were Chris? If they were on the car when you bought it I suppose they could have been there many years, unless the previous owner had a nice receipt for it. It's a bit worrying really and shows it's not just tread depth that should determine when we replace tyres. My own rears are currently just above the 2mm mark and I'll be changing them after the Bruntingthorpe trackday next Friday
 
When I bought the car from Hartech round about 10 months ago, it had the 2 Pirelli's on the front and the 2 Falkens on the rear, all the tyres where 5-6 mil ish at the time and did not require replacing, done roughly 9000 miles since and in an ideal world would prefer to have all 4 replaced at the same time with the same brand which I intended to do in about 2 months.

Have to be honest never been awfully happy with the Falkens on the rear they just dont seem that good a tyre.

As to how old the Falkens where Paul Ive really no idea- I have receipts for years of stuff including some older tyres dating back to 1999 so it could be any time from 99 onwards at a guess.

Might bite the bullet and replace all 4 even though funds dont stretch as Im not a big fan of Pirelli's either[8|]

Ive always found Michelin and Bridgestone pretty good for grip and life span so unless anybody thinks different Ill go with one of those .

I like the Toyo Proxes, and they are good value. about £70 for the front and £85 for the rear for mine.
 
I've never really seen the point in all 4 tyres from the same brand. They are different sizes front to rear and in a lot of cases that means different tread pattern (and presumably also detail of construction) even if they are the same nominal model.

Add to that the fact that Bridgestone or whoever could supply my 265/35 18 rears and 225/40 18 fronts in the same combination for a multitude of cars, some of which will be nose-heavy, some neutral and some rear-heavy and I really don't see how it can all be so fine tuned.

I DO stick to identical tyres on the same axle, of course.

If you read Autocar, you will have read how pleased Robbo was to change his own 996 to the P-Zero Nero during the time he had the car.

I have also tried the P-Zero Rosso on our C43AMG and been very impressed by its performance / comfort balance.

Its the P Zero Direzionale for the front and P Zero Asimmetrico for the rear

The Nero is a different tyre
