Greetings Folks
Happy new year to one and all.
OK so the old girl has done 157k and two or three of the cylinders are leaking and we all know what that means[][]
I use the trustworthy and famous garage in Kings Langley, but the cost of a engine rebuild can't be fixed 'cause no one knows what has happened internally till its all stripped out. Fair enough[:'(]
So that my wallet and I can brace ourselves, what sort of costs have you folks actually experienced having had a rebuild done?[8|]
OK so I can sell her and buy a car that has had all the work done but....................what to do? decisions. decisions.

Sorry Folks
Also forgot to mention the 915 gearbox also needs new syncro rings etc etc.[][] Double b*****ks
Thanks again
Alex

Impossible to say, but for a regular top end you'll be looking at £3-£4K. Your gearbox will be another £1K+ depending upon what needs doing. Happy days.

I don't have any experience of this type of work myself (fortunately), but if you want a second opinion then I would certainly recommend RPM in cheddington. They look after my 3.2 and do a lot of engine re-builds. I'm sure they could give you an estimation of cost.

Hi I'll think you'll find that said garage in kings langley would charge £5 to £6K for just a top end rebuild. That's what they quoted me after a ppi. Have a look on impactbumpers.com I'm sure there was a chap on there that had a total rebuild for very good money in the UK. I've just had mine rebuilt with all machining, new factory barrels and pistons etc for £6500 but the work was done in Europe

If you have the time, space and energy I would highly recommend doing it yourself. I did mine after Reading Wayne dempsey's book. It's still going strong and was a fraction of the cost even with new p&c's !! I also took advantage of a weak dollar and bought most if not everything I neaded from the states..there is a wealth of Information over the planet.. But for gods sake don't sell!! I'm now over 190k miles and looking forward to the next 190!!

I've had experience of both the engine and gearbox rebuild though a few years ago now - and still have the car of course. This is the sort of expense that if you don't do the work yourself is large enough to mean you simply have to keep the car for ever. Mario at Porscheworx in London did the work for me - he is a good mechanic and relatively cheap. My gearbox rebuild cost me £2.5k in 2003 and the engine rebuild £4.8k in 2002 plus a full set of barrells and pistons that I bought seperately in cash for approx £2.5k I seem to recall. My car has also done around 150,000 mls at the time - since I've added another 50k and it is still the daily driver. I would also point out that having done this work I had no choice but to keep on spending money when the car went in for minor bodywork last year and ending up with a complete body rebuild for £15k. I think you simply have to decide that you are committed to keeping the car and what better car to hold onto?

RPM are very competitive on pricing, and do a very good job. They did my RS, very happy. Shop around, its a lot of work. As others have said, ifyou plan to keep the car, take the plunge.

John Holland at Unit 11 in Warrington has a reputation for very good work at reasonable prices - he quoted £2,300 for a top end rebuild in the recent past. Might be worth talking to him if you don't mind travelling to get the work done.

Yes, Unit 11 has a menu price for a top end rebuild and it's only increased a little from what you were quoted before. The rebuild includes inspecting further down so that they can advise you if the rebuild should go further 'while they're there' but their experience is that a 911 used normally, rarely requires further surgery. Of course, there are bound to be a few extras that might crop up once the engine is out and they've stripped it down but you're only paying for the extra parts because the labour is included in the menu price. For those that might think that the price is too good to be true, I think you'll find it is because their standard labour rate is very low compared to what others charge. My 964 is booked to go in for a rebuild in a week's time. It's going to cost more than the menu price but that's because of the lightweight flywheel and clutch upgrade that I've asked for 'while they're in there'. [;)]

You don't mean leaking oil from where the barrels join the crank case do you ? I think everyone else has taken your post to mean compression leaking past valves, rings etc.
