Scottish driving holiday

I posted a while ago asking for advice on my week driving to Scotland.

Well, I'm back now around 1300 miles later. We had a wonderful week, leaving last Saturday driving to Harrogate for dinner with friends. There was a 944 turbo in the parking lot at the Cairn Hotel but I didn't see the owner. Next day we headed up to Crianlarich where my girlfriend had arranged for us to stay at the hostel. Cue some discussion about whether a Porsche at a hostel was allowed! Next day up to Fort William where that question was answered as I parked next to a very nice guy with a 968. After climbing Ben Nevis we headed to Tobermory on the island of Mull. Lots of single track road, which the car handled very well. Good suspension and brakes with a decent turn of speed meant it was quite entertaining and was easily able to brake into the passing places. My girlfriend has some photos of our experience with highland cows in the road, I'll post when she sends them to me. After that a lovely evening in Oban, then off to the island of Arran. On the ferry an older fellow wearing a Ferrari cap had a bit of a peer at the car. The following day he walked up to me and said he'd seen us on the ferry. Turns out he's from Switzerland and had raced Porsches at Hockenheim. Had a nice chat with him and he told me about buying the Geneva motor show Porsche as he was friends with Porsche's PR manager at the time. After Arran I did the marathon drive back to Reading on Saturday. Left me totally exhausted.

The car crossed over 150,000 miles last night on the way home. I had dropped it off at RPM Technik the week before going and I've got to say it ran without a hitch the whole way. The only scary moment was the first morning in the rain in the mountains when the car wouldn't turn over. After the heart attack i realised the lights were on on the radio, so there was power and realised that I'd forgotten about the immobiliser! Started fine after that.

I think I love this car! It was absolutely lovely to drive in the mountains and on the island roads. Great suspension, strong brakes, and good, though not spectacular, acceleration to pass when necessary. All in all it was a great holiday.

The photo shows the car at the wonderful Arran distillery.

Great stuff! Scotland is a superb place to stretch the legs of a 944. Glad to hear you had a good time.

Here's a piccie of my S2 outside Dalwhinnie, to compliment yours outside Arran.

Try France next. More space, smoother roads. Better weather and everything's cheaper!

Oli.

Wow, you got about a bit.

Glad you enjoyed it up here.

Maybe we should have a thread for pics of Porsches outside distilleries![8D]
