Scraping noise from rear Brake?

Went out for a great blast this morning in my S2 on virtually empty roads but I have noticed a really annoying scraping/binding noise from the Offside rear brake at lower speed (around 30-40 mph).

If I pull the handbrake on whilst driving the noise stops, I also tried some heavy braking but the noise is still obvious. If I free wheel I can't feel any resistance and the brake disc doesn't appear to be getting hot. Any suggestions appreciated?

One thing 'springs' (sorry couldn't resist)
The springs in the handbrake shoe linkage tend to snap and the shoes then tend to move about in the drums.

Sounds like your handbrake shoes mate. Have they ever been changed? I am guessing probably not.

Shoes might well be fine, after all they re only drum brake shoes that hold the drum rather than used to stop by applying friction and wearing out. Far more likely to be the springs, you don't want to know the problems I had when my retaining springs let go (breakdown and about £200 repair) so change them if you're in there. I'd guess a good clean-up of the moving parts would fix it, and replace all springs even if they look ok.

I second what Paul said - I had a similar noise but thought it was just salt from the roads clogging something up. Then, the retaining spring snapped and my handbrake locked on while I was doing 40mph. Lucky really, as I was about to join a motorway...
