Screw in tyre

Hi all,

I have just managed to pick up a small screw that's half way embedded itself into my rear tyre.
Don't know how deep it's gone but not wanting to take any chances I called Porsche Assist and have just been brought back home on a low loader.

What shall I do now? If I call Porsche Assist again in the mornng, it will just get towed to my local OPC where they'll want to just change the tyre (it's still fairly new with 7mm tread. OPC's don't repair tyres do they?

Tyre is still fully inflated by the way...the 2 inches of the screw is sticking out but I have no way of knowing how much it has gone in.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Your correct that OPC don't repair tyres, however depending upon where abouts the screw is your good tyre centre possibly will.
It may be that it hasn't punctured the tyre and all will be OK

Yup, I had a rear tyre patched last week as it had a nail on it and was leaking air - cost me 18 quid to fix. Just find a good local tyre dealer to do the job for you.

Thank you.....I'll have a look at a few places online now.
I guess I'll have to drive there though as I would have no other physical means of getting the car there

My big worry is they don't scratch/damage the alloy while taking the tyre off :-( .....my turbo alloys are all pristine!

Fingers crossed

Where are you?
Maybe people can reccomend places in your area.

Oh that would be great......I'm in North London, Arnos Grove/Friern Barnet. (N11)

There is a Kwikfit thats close, but I'm really wary of that place..

I have had tyres successfully pluged at SRS ( Stapletons) in barnet . Always found them helpful and have changed several sets of my cars over the years .

Thanks Jonathan :)

I called just now and will take it in tomorrow morning.

997's don't come with jacks anymore so taking the wheel off isn't possible :-/

Well it is possible - but not without a small investment in a trolley jack, torque wrench and socket[;)]

The same has happened to me this weekend. I took the wheels off to clean them and found a screw embedded in a rear tyre. I took the wheel to a local repairer and he refused to repair it but it was leaking air slightly. He said no way would he repair an N1 rating as the cornering forces on the car could tear the plug out.

As I have only 2.3mm left I have two tyres on order now from KwikFit who were cheapest and could get some. Can't get them until Thursday but need them for the Cotswold rally. My only fear is them damaging the tubo wheels.

Thats a new one!

As with all tyre fitters it's down to the individual. I always take an interest and hover over their shoulder and make small talk. That usually does the trick and they know to take care of your p&j. My local Kwik fit also fill with nitrogen for £1 a wheel.

Go to Sams Tyres on London Road. About 15 minutes from where you are. They are at the old Stephen James BMW Site and they will fix it the old fashion way....costs around £25!!!

Certainly is!! [&:]

Its alright looking at the cheapest cost of the tyre, but after you've worked out the additonal cost to refurbish a wrecked rim! the actual tyre price can become insignificant..
To be fair to all tyre centres, its the staff and knowledge- and time available that can make the difference.
My local 'non named' tyre centre doesn't get my business after they dropped a previous wheel rim on its face!![]

Brave man who entrusts anything to Kwik-Fit in my experience.

It is down to the individual changing the tyre but I would still get the store manager to agree to the state of the wheel before the Trained Monkey gets their hands on it.

The wheels will be inspected before they start, and I will be supervising them. Any doubt from them and I'll just take the tyres.

Well I got a call from Kwik Fit saying the tyres had arrived early so I've just had them fitted. They took great care with the fitting including removing the old weights, even removing the old weights adhesive with some cleaner. A quick clean of the hubs and a bit of copper grease where the wheel sits. Checked for tyre pressures and torque settings. Cleaned the surplus adhesive off the face of the tyres when fitted. Even cleaned the tyre fitting machine before they started.

An excellent job (maybe I was lucky but I was stood watching).
