Securing battery cover(s)

Odd question possibly; but I've been regassing the aircon and had to remove the screw holding down the cover that is next to the battery cover under the bonnet ... there was one screw holding this cover in place that went into a rubber grommet that protrudes through the metal skin ... I assumed this means it was secured inside the wheel arch in some way, but I can't see it ... and now I have lost whatever grabs the screw to fasten it .... am I going mad (probably) ... is there a knack to this?

If it the fixing I am thinking of, the rubber grommet has a captive nut in the bottom. When the bolt is tightened, it pulls the nut upwards so the grommet squashes and spreads out under the metal to hold the fixing in place.
