Sensor "ticking"

Hi All,

This one is a bit strange I'm sure, I have a ticking sound coming from the glovebox area or just behind the glovebox, it sounds as loud as the indicator tick when they are on! It happens when the ignition is off even when I rock the car, but is constant when I drive a long. It sounds very much like an electrical sensor clicking on and off. Any ideas.

Graham.

I get a similar sound from the dash but I would describe it as a buzzing sound. It also stays around for a few minutes after turning off the ignition.

I did a search on Rennlist (as I suspected it to be a common problem) and hear that it is a small fan for the HVAC system. I assume it can be replaced but it's way down my list at the moment.

Can any of the seasoned 964ers fill us in with more details?

The fan Steve is referring to is the sampler fan for the heater. It aids the air flow over the cabin temperature sensor to let the CCU maintain the selected heat level. They tend to get clogged up with muck and gunge and that gives rise to the cabin temperature getting cooler as time goes on. You then turn the heat up and all it well for a while. I've got this problem on mine but haven't got around to cleaning it yet.

The fan is normally pretty quiet and if it is this fan making the noise which Graham refers to it might be that there is something caught in the blades or a wire is touching it or something similar. The fan is right on the back of the CCU - so can see it if you peer under the dash but it's better to remove the CCU if you are going to clean it.

The fan is designed to run for a while after the ignition is switched off - although I can't imagine why. There is sometimes a problem with the driver resistor in the CCU which cause the fan to run permanently and eventually flatten the battery.

Hope that helps.

Dave

Thanks Steve/ Dave,

But mine is deffinately a ticking sound as I said similar to when your indicators are on. It's as though a sensor is clicking in and out, any idaeas?

Graham.

If your car's got rear shelf sensors for the alarm, I suspect you'll find one (or both) is playing up. Try covering one (eg with some BluTak). I had this happen with mine. One of the sensors stayed active even with the alarm disarmed and the engine running - the relay ticks away underneath the glovebox IIRC.

Either that, or it is a bomb. How fast do you run away from the car when you park it ?
