Hi all,

Whilst cleaning my car I noticed this hanging loose just in front of the front passenger wheel. I think I have dislodged it today going over rough ground and know it rattles a bit. I have re-attached it but not sure if there long term damaged. Any idea of what it is?

Welcome Scott!

It looks like the ballast resistor for the LH radiator fan. Without it, the fan won't run in the low speed setting.

Thanks Richard,

Is there an easy way of testing if it is faulty? Also I guess if it only controls the low speed of the fan and the fan will still kick in at full speed if required, it wouldn't do any harm if it is not working?

Thanks,
Scott

The low speed fans come onwhen the water temp reaces 100C, and the high speed at 105C. Most people don't notice when the resistor fails. If the other side is working, it is sometimes hard to tell.

The resistor is about 0.55 ohms IIRC, so you could measure it, but that will be more difficult than you imagine. It is very difficult to get to the plug, and the workshop manual tells you to cut the wires to connect a new resistor.

If you need a new one, shop around. They are expensive from Porsche.

I used the Aluminum Clad resistors like these I think I found one and bought the other at a grand cost of £2.50

Available in various sizes

As Richard said they are expensive from Porsche, I remember laughing at the price and wondering how can they get away with charging that for a resistor!.

Thanks guys. Sounds like it is probably not worth the hassle of changing them. I have noticed that as soon as I stop the fans kick in. so probably just over 80oC. Is this normal?

Personally, Id make sure I fixed anything to do with cooling on these cars.

Especially as it would cost about a fiver.
