What is the best and most cost effective way to increase the BHP of the series 1 944? Or should I look for a 944 Turbo?

Lighten it as much as you can and then replace the camshaft and the inlet tract (deleting all of the restriction) and fit a Tom Barker Augtronic ECU with MAP sensor and whatever other goodies he can tempt you with.

There is nothing else that will really work. Series one racers may have 175bhps, or maybe even 180bhp after a lot of work, but their fuel consumption is terrible. Toms ECU wont come with that penalty so itll pay for itself in a relatively short time.

A cylinder head and fuel system overhaul will help to restore lost horses and get the car back to where it should be power wise. You would have to spend a lot to get even an extra 10 bhp above standard. If you want serious power the turbo is the way to go.

Fit the so called throttle response cam onto the throttle body. It'll feel like its got an extra 20 bhp.

Throttle cam

Most UK 944 specialists will stock this . Promax Porsche shop etc

+1 for the throttle cam, its a 5min fix. I also installed quick shift linkage, both upgrades created a more positive driving sensation.
Agreed that early cars are not rocket ships but a nice clean car looks good, they handle well, fit a nice stereo and cruise. With no Turbo or Air Con that's two less things to worry about [:)]

That 2 stage wooden picnic bench on the rear hatch probably slows it up a bit[:D]
(only joking - look at the pic of your car above[;)]).

The throttle response cam has been fitted and it definitely accelerates quicker. Thanks for the advice above.
