Question: does anyone recommend a good garage to service an old girl (not my wife)? Anyone used Maxted-Page for example?

Bob Watson without a doubt. I have a 911T: once with a 2.2 on webbers/ then a 2.4E on MFI and now a Watson chipped 3.2 in it; versatile guy. Bob has done bits and pieces on it since 1989 and great on early suspension setting to.

Really ace and if a distance from you (he is in Bicester, Oxfordshire) worth the drive to the Costwolds.
He can also do a power run on his own rolling road too to see what you have in the engine!

Depends where you are?
and also what model you have and want/need doing. theres good specialists all around the country.
just for a normal yearly service, mot and odd jobs i take my cars to Zentrum, Nottingham as its nearest to me.

i do however NEED urgently to find a sportomatic specialist. who actually appreciated sportomatics. they are becoming increasingly rare cars and so (IMHO) are well worth preserving in Very Very good conditon.

Berny Tester will sort you out for your sporto Helen, what's your problem I fettle mine too you know. [;)]

no problem, i just want to keep it that way.. and its due for a really good service. i have noticed the gear change has got abit clunky lately and i would like to get this sorted before it becomes a problem.

Could be just adjusment Bones!give me a call! as you know we do quite a few early cars but are getting more and more Boxters. Regards Berny.

Sounds like the points in the gear shift may need cleaning and /or adjusting, they are critical to the system. Berny - I once had the torque converter fail, diagnosing that was almost impossible, it just locked up! The fault suggested the clutch was at fault or the bellows weren't operating properly. In a last attempt to cure the problem after the engine had been out half a dozen times a secondhand torque converter was found and it ran perfectly as soon as it was fitted, so if the system just 'locks up' consider the torque converter even though they rarely fail. I have a spare but who knows if it would work after all this time wrapped up in plastic. They can be split - as you probably know better than me - and repaired by an old fashioned automatic repair specialist.
