Service and Oil Change advice

I've decided to buy a Official Porsche service kit and service the porker myself. I have a couple of questions relating to this would be adventure.

1. A recommendation of what's the best oil to use? (10 litres of the stuff I believe).
2. Any advice other than to make sure that the engine is hot when checking the oil level after putting new oil in, I've read that there is 2 oil release plugs that you need to remove, where are they located?
3. Is it necessary to replace the rocker cover gaskets, washers & nylon nuts (as they come in the kit) and how hard is it to do?
4. Is the fuel filter and sparks plugs easy to fit.

I want to ascertain whether it's better to get it serviced from an independent or whether it's worth giving it a go first?

Thanks for any help.

I would advice you get a big open container i.e. bucket to catch the oil - especially from the oil tank. The speed in which it empties catches almost everyone out during their first oil change resulting in an big oil slick.
You only need to change the rocker cover gaskets if checking the valves. Don't go near them for an oil change.
Fuel filter and plugs - easy enough - use the tool provided in the tool kit to get the plugs out, they're set pretty far under the ducting.

Hello,
Working on your own car can be very rewarding so its good to have a go.
Firstly your hand book should show pictures of where the 2 drain plugs are for your oil change, one on the engine casing and the other on the bottom of the oil tank. Both will need to be drained. You are correct you should aim for 10 ltrs put in about 9 ltrs first and only add when checking the level after the engine has wormed up properly i.e. after a run. It is important not to overfill so take care. The full capacity of my engine is 13 ltrs so their are 3 ltrs that can't be drained off.
I use Quantum 10w-40 part sinthetic in my 911SC but this ia a matter of choice. The hand book says any good quality premium oil should be used and in the hand book there is a climate chart refrence different grades as a guide.
I found changing the plugs needs to be done carefully because the plugs are in a long way and getting the correct angle of the plug spanner can be tricky.( you don't want anycross threads).
The rocker gaskets only need to be changed if you are checking the tappet clearences but on the other hand these gaskets can leak over time, if your gaskets are old then changing them is a good thing.
To change the gaskets two from inside the boot and two from under the car will need to be jacked up the car with the rear wheels off. A safety tip for you, you should have two good axle stands for this job the hand book will tell you where to site them.
Fuel filter again needs care for spillage and just to be on the safe side I would disconnest the battery.
You will find working on your porsche takes time and I say it takes what it takes.
The next tip for you is to put on your christmass list a Bentley workshop manual, I bought mine from the club for my SC. You might want to check this out for the Carerra.
Cheers
John
