Service Cost

I picked up my 911 996 Carrera 4 this weekend and want to give it a major service it has travelled 86000 miles and the previous owner drove it very little and last serviced 2010 with 57000 miles on the clock. I have had a quote from Porsche for £1000 and a local independent Philip Raby has quoted me nearly half that. Now the quandary is, is it worth paying the extra to get the Porsche stamp or do I go with the local garage? Thanks in advance for your help.

Lovely car ????

Unless it’s had a full OPC service history throughout its life I wouldn’t bother for a car of that age (and even then it’s questionable)

We have always used an independent for ours, get recommendations from members of your local region for who they use. We have always used Autostrasse in Essex, even though we moved to Aylesbury ten years ago. Build up a good relationship with an independent you can trust and it can pay dividends.

Hi , you should try Andy Windsor at AW Motorsport in southbourne Porsche specialist I have been using him for years on my 996c2 and now on my 996 turbo he’s fantastic and very knowledgeable on all Porsche , water and air cooled , I can’t recommend him enough!! Regards Gary.

I would go with your Indy , he may become your friend ! Also given the ten year plus ‘ gap’ in the service book i can’t see a OPC stamp making a lot of difference.

75 PNO

Agree with all the above. Unless its full OPC, it is pointless IMO. Also, and I speak from my experiences, it wont be true of all, I took mine to an OPC that at that time before prices rose, were the same as the Indy I bought it from, but, depspite assuring me they would do it properly, didnt. Had to take it to an Indy as they didnt bleed the brakes and clutch properly after fluid change. Not quite sure where you are based, but a number of Indys loacl to me, all of whom I know:

Northway
Wrighttune
RPM Technik
Autofarm

Not used by me, but recommended Dove House,

Paragaon Porsche and Clifford Porsche get mentioned too.

Hope that helps, and, enjoy

Also, if you didnt get an inspection done before purchase, I'd recommend they do one at the service, but, that's just me :)

Further to other's comments, I've had my 2003 996.2 Targa for the last six years and have used Dove House in Rushden, Northamptonshire for all servicing and miscellaneous work. I'd thoroughly recommend them and can't speak highly enough of Tony Whitcombe (Technical Manager) and Ryan (Technician) who do all the work on my car.
I did originally try Porsche ... but they didn't really inspire confidence that they knew about "older" cars. I think their one specialist left!

There’s no quandary in my mind, it’s a 20 year old car. A good Indy all the way.

But I think you’ll be lucky to ‘only‘ have to spend £500, with 30k miles in 10+ years and potentially little or no servicing.

Ditto above.

A good Indie with a good name like Northway would be a good investment and they will advise on anything else that maybe coming after 11 years of neglect.

Thanks everyone for your advice and I have booked my car in to a local Porsche specialist Philip Rayby in Emsworth and hope it wont work out to be too painful :ROFLMAO: no-one ever said owning a Porsche would be cheap
