Service Costs - HELP!

Hi,

I hope someone can help a porsche virgin! I am looking a getting a Porsche Boxster for my next car, maybe 4 years old or so, and though the cost of the car is not a problem I am being scared off by the 'high' service costs. The problem is I don't know what 'high' actually relates to in money terms. I currently own an Audi TT, I am going to notice a massive difference?

Could someone give me an idea of actual service costs and how often a service is required. Also is it necessary to go to a main dealer for the service?

If you look on the Porsche web site, they now have a service price menu, so you know what you are letting yourself in for if you take the OPC route:

If the car is out of warranty, and a few years old, you might want to consider using one of the many excellent independent Porsche specialists, where the cost can be around half that of an OPC. For Example:

People always like to see an OPC stamp in the book although I gather that it is unusual to see a car out of warranty serviced at an OPC. I picked up a Boxster service charge leaflet from PC Bristol last week and the pre-facelift 986 isn't even listed.

I've also driven Audis before getting my current Boxster. Though I haven't needed any regular service so far, I think what you'll be facing may be similar service costs, but higher repair costs (depending on what type of Audi you were driving of course). For example, I recently had to have a punctured rear tire replaced on my 987S, which cost 322 GBP. It's just a bigger tire than the ones I had on my Audi TT and the replacement was done at a London Porsche dealership.
 
Before buying mine I spoke to an ex-OPC man who said it is acceptable to get the big services done at somewhere like Richard recommends (I have used Northway and they're good) and the minor services at an OPC - that way potential buyers will see that there is still some OPC care for the car in the later years. Expect about £350 for the basics at an OPC and maybe £275 at the specialist independants but the difference gets bigger if extra work is needed (Northway state their menu prices on their website). You will get discounts at some places for PCGB membership, so always ask[:)]. Also ask if the specialists use genuine Porsche parts.
 
IMHO these cars can be very reasonable to run if you are prepared to shop around a bit. For example, my brother has a '99 C4 and just bought TWO rear tyres (latest Conti Sport Contact 2's) for £320 - wheras Ente (above) paid £322 for ONE. In the course of a couple of years ownership you could easily save a couple of thousand pounds by using independents and specialists, rather than OPC's.

Of course, I'm a cheapskate........but I would hate to pay for the overheads of an OPC by taking a car of mine's age to one. It has to be the most expensive 'free' coffee you can buy.
 
Richard you're certainly right about the savings potential for the same car in different places. My tire replacement cost is the upper end of the spectrum but it serves to illustrate the parts cost difference between the marques, simply because it's a different kind of tire. My Audi TT tires were 17" 225s, if I remember correctly, whereas the Boxster ones are 19" 265s N rated. When comparing Audi repair costs at a cheap place with Porsche repair costs at the same place, the Porsche parts may still come out more expensive. That's what I wanted to convey.
 
Ente, you are absolutely right , it is bound to cost more to run a Porsche than an Audi. Although the dealer labour rates are probably similar, the price of genuine parts is bound to be higher, and I wouldn't use anything but OEM parts on mine. All I am really saying is that they can be surprisingly economical to run if you want to take the 'independent' route, and probably a similar level of expense to taking an Audi TT to an Audi dealer. It shouldn't frighten anyone off buying one of these fabulous machines.
 
Hi. I have just had a minor service, brake check and MOT at OPC Nottingham. The cost of the service was £180. MOT free as i had it serviced there and the car was cleaned as well .They recomended new rear discs and pads at a cost of £580. I have had this done in a local garage for £200.
