Service due: 987.2 / 2.9 / 65K miles

My 59 plate car was serviced with a Major and brake fluid change at 59K in October 2019 by the ever dependable Zuffenhaus in south Birmingham which is where it will be going to again, a great Indie imho.
I've emailed for their recommendation for the 12 month service but thought I would ask on here for any thoughts on what is the right next Service level.

Plug, filter and fluid changes are all to schedule and the car runs a dream.
Any thoughts?
 
This old chestnut.

My father used to have his cars serviced every year without fail, no matter what the service manual said.
I have mine serviced to the manual (2 year / 20k) and as I extend the warranty I don't believe I need to do anything more.

In the past we had a Pug 207 and a year after the service the dealer rang me to book it in again. I said as it's serviced to the manual I'll pass thanks.
They said that a lot of people wanted peace of mind. I said, I have peace of mind, if it goes wrong, and as I've serviced it as you asked me to, I will expect any warranty claim to be upheld and honoured.

Each to their own.

As others have noted you’re not due a scheduled service until next year when it’s the major 12-year service which includes a transmission oil and air filter change along with the plugs and drive belt.

I’m in the same boat as you since my October 2009 CS is due the same service next year ... I’d better start saving now!

Hi, I am also in the same timeframe as you. Had my 33K mile 2010 987.2 given a major service by Zuffenhaus in October. I really only wanted someone who had more experience than me to spend some time looking at it.
They mentioned an annual service and that doing my own minor service along with brake bleeding, transmission fluid and other minor repairs may not be good for the future value.
I am still not convinced that this is strictly true. I keep a diary along with receipts and take photos of everything I do so I can date it if needed.
If I ever decided to sell, I think it would be more compelling to a prospective buyer that I was concerned about its maintenance and condition, rather than just having lots of service stamps.
At the end of the day it’s an individual choice. I am only doing about 3k miles a year and felt I was being guided into a few hundred pound of work that I am more than able to do myself just as well for much less with some spanners and half a day in coveralls. I also enjoy wielding tools and the feeling of a job done properly.
Mine will probably get an indi service every four years unless something goes wrong. It was bought as a project and up to now I have managed to sort it all with YouTube and boxa.nets help.
I feel that if it’s not broke or likely to break then why mess and possibly induce failures that wouldn’t have happened.
Just my 10p worth.

ZH have said a simple annual service, £165.

I have a 1973 911 with a stock 3.2 in it which I installed in 1994 with the engine/box at 61K miles (1986 engine).
It was a hill climb/road car, about 3K /year for 12 years and it had Shell Helix every year no matter what and today it has a 140K ish, still getting the oil, and has never been apart, 2 sets of plugs and 2 dist caps/arms and a few tappet adjusts. Runs like a sewing machine, used to get very thrashed, no so now.

I have this longevity down to all that oil going through it!

I'll have the simple service suggested, and I get also a good opinion from the tech about the car which I find assuring.

The service after sounds a HUGE one...
I'm getting the services done by a noted Indie as I hope it will 'value' the car better with the Porsche, PCT, Zuffenhaus stamps in the book.
Have to say, FSH on any of my cars in the past has had little effect on the trade-in value...

I know the Service book interval is 2 yearly but, on my Boxsters I have always had an additional oil change and check over at yearly intervals. I'm not as mechanically able as you and I like to know that everything is in fine fettle. Two years feels a long time to me!
 
Just getting a price for a 6 year (20,000) minor service. It makes me jump a bit when what is a really an oil service is over £650.00 (with air filters/ belt and brake fluid... getting on for £1000). These are pretty basic tasks. But this is the price of keeping the warranty intact, exclusivity, and the nice coffee.

I do question the worth of the pollen filter change on a low mileage car (5k since last service) which spends most of it's time with the roof down !

I’m sure that all the car manufacturers set their service and repair prices such that their official dealerships make sufficient profit on their operations, bearing in mind that the dealers are required to train their technicians on a regular basis and that they have to maintain a high standard of sometimes specialist tools, none more so than Porsche dealerships I suspect.

Porsche servicing prices will reflect both this and that the fact that service intervals are every 2-years/20,000 miles, so it would be fairer to look at their servicing costs per year which probably are comparable with those of other so-called premium makes.

Despite their smart premises and high prices, I’m not convinced that the standard of workmanship at the Porsche main dealerships is any better than at that of a well-run volume manufacturer dealership. When questioning a technician now working more happily at a Porsche Independent who’d worked at a Porsche dealership he said that he was paid there on the basis of the official time to do a job and a ‘bonus’ for work done over and above that. Hardly conducive to being allowed to be extra careful just because it’s a Porsche!

My 987.2 goes to Zuffenhaus next Friday for a while you wait minor service.
peace of mind as Laura says, an expert check of the car and underside and a £165 bill.

My Skoda Superb computes the service interval for me based on my driving over time, usually at 9000 miles it goes in, minor service? About £120 while I wait. It is a diesel, so understand it needs a bit more tlc.

I ok with this schedule I have, the Boxster does not lead a hard life, I'm too old to opposite lock around Wales, just good drives out some long tours and more short runs, about 30 miles round trips, so not must hard driving going on, but like the idea of that fresh oil going round.

Will ask about the70k service that will be due in late summer.

Have you asked if the the Fixed Price Servicing option is still available ? ... it covers all the items you mention. In November 2019 I paid £775 under this option for a 981 Cayman S six year service. As you say, it would otherwise have been close to the £1k

Not all dealers used to operate the option - mine did not but agreed to price match when I asked

Regards the comparison to higher volume operators ... my own experience is that the Porsche dealership is by far the best designed and operated for maintenance. The work is not rushed and both the advisers and technicians are relaxed and very open. It has been easy to set up a positive rapport with the senior / gold technician whom I can call on at anytime for anything
 
Not asked specifically, but with an oil change it's £895 by the fixed price you attach.

I haven't got past reception so no bonding bonding with the techs.
 
As ever, oil change by the efficient Zuffenhaus this morning...
But...

"Have you seen the coolant coming out?"

Looks like I have a leak from the front hose that I replaced a few months ago. Fluid was level 3 days ago, now leaking.

Just might bite the bullet and simply change everything as a mini-adventure and just be done with it.
hope it is dry tomorrow so can have a good look.

hope it’s an easy fix.
You did a fair bit of replacement work earlier in the year so hopefully it’s just a clip that needs tightening or something that simple.
The forecast for tomorrow in the midlands is fair, but still a bit cold. Can you get it in a garage to work on, or are you on a drive?

I suspect theleak is from the badlycorroded pipe that is on the near side to theplastic longitudinal tube in the subframe. The expansion of the rust stretched the plastic opening and allows a lot of wobble of the pipe when the pressure is off, seems to seal when the engine is running.
My plan, if dry, is to pull that pipe out which will be simple as it is new, and to shim the new staged steel sleeve to be a tighter fit to the plastic hole between the land for the O ring and the steel wire clip.
I bought 2 new clips this morning, one as a spare.
if this does not work it will be out with the lot and change everything, fed up messing with this car!
Garage if full of an old 911, a big race car, and a classic Honda motorcycle, so out on the drive on axle stands like in he Good ole Days, but I was somewhat younger then, but the time is free.
