Service History on 1990 Carrera 2

Hi guys,

In a real dilema at the moment over service history. Bought my 964 carrera 2 last year from a guy who had it for 7 years, this car has only ever been seen by a main dealer Sutton Coldfield the last few years. I currently live in Southport and would like to findout which Main dealer have a good reputation for looking after there customers.

I work for a main dealer myself and understand the importance of service history but would like to know which Porsche dealership will maintain my car the best or even does this matter now my car is 17 years old.

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

You can only ask. Some OPCs have staff who were trained on 964s but most will have only people more recently trained on more modern cars. If you go to see the service manager I'm sure he will tell you what experience they have. Some OPCs are also charging lower labour rates for the older cars.

You'll find that most 964 owners now take their cars to independants for service rather than OPC since the experience tends to be broader - and I suspect a stamp in the service book matters not a jot whether it's from an OPC or an independant.

Regards

Dave

Hi Paul

Not sure if this helps, but I also have a 1990 C2 and previous owner had also had it a while with quite a few OPC stamps in the book. I took it to and still take it to Two Plus Tow in Merry Hill. They are really well versed in older Porsches and I trust them completely. Not many places where you can say that. They are honest, good value and straight talkers. If you have bought a dog, they will tell you. Likewise, if you have done a good deal, they will keep it in good nick for you.

I'd give them a shot and let them at least review your motor and then you'll know where you stand.

I've had mine for 2 to 3 years now and it is running as sweet as anything.

Good luck, and don't be tempted by the OPC route for a car this old. Who provides the stamp is less important than their credentials and that does not need to be OPC for a 964. Just a garage with knowledge.

Cheers
Trevor

I wouldnt take mine to an OPC.. I think older cars in general are better serviced by specialists or competent mechanics. In the case of something as high performance and special as the porsche you really need someone with experience and knowledge of the vehicle, and I dont think you automatically get that with a main dealer.. As already mentioned they are very well versed in newer cars, however Id rather spend my money with someone who has experience of MY vehicle, than someone with a shiny showroom..

Personally I feel there is too much emphasis placed on dealer service history on all cars; provided there is evidence the servicing has been done and its been done to a suitable standard (ie not some dodgy bloke with a halfords socket set putting tesco's own brand oil into his veyron) then I think thats enough..

Personally I entrust my car to a specialist for things like timing/tappets/major servicing, however oil changes and general maintanance I do myself.. Everything is done with original Porsche parts, and I keep photographic evidence and receipts for the work being carried out. I don't see this as an issue, however I don't intend selling my car.. For me, part of the enjoyment of having a car like this is the ability to do work like this when you want to.. Maintanence and fiddling is something I enjoy!..

I use GCR Central in Leicester and I am VERY happy with the work done and the cost, however its probably a bit far for you to travel..

I use John Holland at Unit 11 Porsche,Warrington,he is very knowledgeable, reliable and sensibly priced.I take my own Mobil 1 oil(from Costco) and the official Porsche service pack(bought from Chester OPC).E-mail meif you like.He advertises in Porsche Post.

You could also consider Ninemeister in Warrington. Their service and knowledge is excellent. Well known as 964 and 993 specialists.

OPCs are not worth considering for these cars IMO.

Another recommendation for John at Unit 11 here. All my Porsches go there and he knows everything there is to know about the air cooled models - and most things about the other models too!

Cheers,
Bryn.

I know one thing, after my experiences with main dealers of all makes including OPC's I wouldn't let one even clean my 964 !! or any other Porsche for that matter however new or old .
