I welcome the thoughts of all the deeply knowledgeable lot who appear on here. am looking forward to posting and interacting as an owner rather than 'guest'
I am currenlty being offred an 89 with a reputed mileage below 80k. photos of the car look good and everything seems to stack up. i have two concerns
1. the current owner has only had the car for a year and is selling
2. there is extensive serivce history from new but there is a break with no mot copies for 06 and 07 and no porsche service history from 2004 at 60k
i am told that a service was carried out in 09 at 74k with a belt change
i know ive been told sevice history is paramount but if everything else points in the right direction should i being concerned about the missing data?

Sounds like this could be a good car, but more investigation is required, i would get an independent survey done and then dependent upon price you would have to weigh up any work that needs to be done against the cost of the car, these cars are now getting on in age and each car would need to be judged on its own merits. Good luck and happy hunting!

You can get all the previous mots online from the dvla website if you know a few reg details. That way you can see what 06 and 07s mots said or if the car was sorn.

you need to have it checked out by a local specialist before you buy - where are you located?

Is it possible that, if the car was serviced in 2009 with belts as well, the garage could do a copy of the invoice? I'd imagine it wasn't less than £500 and there should be no problem supplying at least some documentation. Even a cheque stub or credit-card statement would at least back the story up. Of course it's possible that the work was done off the books for cash. This isn't necessarily a problem, and a word with the garage could confirm it. I know of a car sold last year that had a service record right through, but one "receipt" was just a list of work on the back of an envelope, with prices. That's what the owner got from the guy as it was a cash deal, but at least there was some record. [8|] If the worst happens and there's no proof of the service then I'd consider just budgeting for a major service and factoring that in to the deal. No-one could argue with you if they've not kept any record of the work. If the car is a good one then it's not worth losing over a service.

As Paul said - if the car is otherwise good, don't go sweating about the lack of a piece of paper from some time in the past. A F-documented-SH is somewhat over-rated. A car that has obviously been cared for an loved will stand out, and make a good purchase. As has been said by others, if it is your first 944, and with this gap in the history, an inspection at a local indie is a good idea. Oli.

whereabouts Foxy ? I'm in South Somerset . I shouldn't worry too much about the missing service docs. Most cars that are over 20 years old rarely get serviced regularly and tend to get repaired at local indies .It would need to be a pretty exceptional car to have all its service history and receipts kept for 20+ years. If the seller cannot prove that the belts have been changed then you should both assume that they have not been replaced and deduct the cost of replacing the belts, chain and waterpump from the price of the car. If your chain or cam belt breaks the car would be a write-off The car is the same age as mine .Glad to look at the car with you or help with any questions or advice etc. There is a very good buyers check list somewhere if you search the site

at the moment ther is no proof of anything but I am assured all documentation is correct, will confirm once i have seen the details, including a full service at 74k with belt changes. the question was more about the three years without any service history and two mots missing
