Service interval

What's the official service interval on a 2004 Boxster S likely to be? I'm not expecting to do more than 6000 miles a year. I ask because the salesman stated 2 years or 12000 miles and I'm still not sure I believe it!

Chris.

I'm impressed - before talking to them, I was quite expecting "every year without fail".

Thanks,
Chris.

It's from MY04 onwards that it changed. Prior to that if you were low mileage you were meant to have an 'annual inspection', i.e. no oil change but a look see.

With the service schedule, do you think its...

A - Written with the interests of your Boxster lasting forever without issues such as variocam problems, RMS leaks or an engine that self destructs.

or

B - Written in the interests of it being appealing to potential buyers of new cars (low running costs) while allowing the car to survive the factory warranty period.

Also, if you follow the Porsche every other year service plan, will the engine last for hundreds of thousands of miles with periodic (every 120k to 150k) top end rebuilds as is possible with every other flat 6 Boxer engine that Porsche have ever made with require annual servicing?.

Just some food for discussion.

fair points. i see you've had 4 boxsters - what has been your approach in the past and/or did anything happen that might have been a non-issue had you gone yearly? would be interesting to have your views/opinions, thanks

I don't have the paperwork with me to check against (after all why would I carry such information around just for the hell of it) but isn't the Boxster interval 24k or 2 years?

MY2004 986 cars were 12k miles or 2 years - you may still be able to use the annual low mileage service if you wanted, but this is purely an oil change (although you could ask them to do the filter as well). Given your mileage i'd just stick to the 2 year/12k mark.

My 987 is 2 years or 20k miles - i changed the oil n filter myself at 10k miles - i personally think 20k miles is too long for an oil, even though the oil experts will tell you how advanced their products are. There are plenty of cars with well over 150k miles still on the roads that used shorter service intervals, and thats the philosophy i'm following.

one last point Chris - whatever you buy make sure its had the 4year/48k miles major service. The service alone is around £590, and then you have to add on spark plugs £130, brake fluid £125, and polyrib belt change. You are looking at £850 before the OPC call and tell you that you need new brakes, that'll be another £1300 sir.

Full major service at an independent will cost you around £550.

The sales guy looked in the book while we were out and he says its just had the major service.

Thanks,
Chris.
