Yes its time to get down and dirty [:D] , now I normaly use Mobil 1 but I'm wondering if there isnt anything either better suited to an old engine ie a little thicker or maybe just as effective but cheaper? The car in question is a 2.5 lux, what are your thoughts?

I know it's not quite what you are asking, but I firmly believe that you do better to run an average oil and change it more often than a very expensive oil and change it infrequently.

I use seni-synth oil from a Vauxhall Dealership. Why? It's very good oil (read the detailed spec sheet closely) and it is very well priced. And I change it every 6,000 miles. This still works out much, much cheaper than using Mobil 1 every 12,000 miles, and offers better protection. Oil gets pretty dirty after 12,000 miles, and it's the dirt that does more damage than anything else.

Oli.

I did a litle search on this board yesterday and came to the conclusion I was probably better sticking with Mobil 1 15w50, mine does about 5-6000 per anum (although not 100% sure as the odometer has stopped working and I have been comuting by bike, just to confuse the figures!), so it is a once yearly oil change anyway.

Couldn't quite bring myself to visit a Vauxhall dealers [:D] even if its good oil.

My philosophy is to go fully synthetic all the tme. They degrade much less through petrol contamination than mineral or sime-synths and lets face it, the price difference between a good oil and an average oil in real terms is not that much - maybe a few beers. I like beer ALOT, but can miss out on a few beers over 6 months for the sake of putting in a tip top quality fully synthetic oil. I even put fully syth. in the Focus. The only problem with Mobil 1 is that it's not an Ester oil therefore is not clingy and therefore does not provide max protection at immediate start up.
