Servicing in London ?

Advice on where to take my air cooled 993 for servicing, including suspension etc in the London area please ...

Assuming you're wishing to avoid OPC, then JAZ in NW London are well respected and know their stuff. Good service and I was pleased with the work done.

Bob Arnold at RGA in Vauxhall is really excellent, I've used him a lot over many years of 911 ownership. Don't be put off by his railway arches premises!

There's quite a few others (see Porsche section on Pistonheads forum) but I've not used them:

A friend speaks highly of Tower Porsche in SE1, a bit like RGA, small, personal service and do a good job.

Many more in London suburbs or M25 towns but I've not used them.

I did take mine for a 'big' service to Porsche HQ in Reading a few months ago, they have a team dedicated to 'heritage' cars. The car has never run better and it wasn't that expensive (including PCGB discount on parts). And they gave me a brand new Cayman S to use whilst it was with them! Will need a good reason not go back.

Hope this helps.

GT One -Chertsey. 01932 569911/944. Speak to Craig or Peter -mention my name!

5 min walk from main line station.

Gt One certainly very good, extremely detailed in their detail down to grommets in the footwell, be prepared to pay but have your car back in as new mechanically.

Agree, GT One good service but pricey.

I now use Nine Excellence in Horley... Bit further out but top service and reasonably priced.

Also am a big fan of Ray Northway, but he is also out of Central London, so not really answering the OP's question...

OPC option would be Hatfield .. All depends how good they are with 993 & how cost effective. Otherwise it would be a choice of
Portiacraft, Jaz, JZM, No.5 in Ealing or Tognola Engineering which is a little further away.

Paul McLean Gtclassics ..... Knows his RS from his elbow[:D]

Seriously would only use Paul when it eventually comes to full rebuild time .... Talking air cooled here

Condor - no shortage of options then!

Hope we haven't overwhelmed you, but everyone above is experienced and you've got some good advice here.

I note you've got the air-cooled version of the 993 but it all depends on the type of engine - is it diesel or petrol?

If it's the diesel version you'll have trouble finding anyone to help.

'point taken' thank you ! Must have been a hard day in the office for me ...

I just wonder whether the OPCs are as competent with these older models ...

PS .. I'm now looking for a hybrid 993 .. hehehe

I'm sure you'll be fine at an OPC - I have VERY good memories of OPC Cardiff and Reading. Why would they not want to take an interest in 'classic' models? Tina at OPC Cardiff got quite hot under the collar when I showed her the cut of my jib, so to speak.

The courtesy car is an important benefit. And they will look at pretty-much everything - at a cost. Try them for tyres!

Yes - I have an indie - WrighTune. Wonderful, really knowledgeable, accommodating chaps with lots of grease. I think of them like I think of the wife - a lovely woman - but every now and again you need a really good s**g - a bit on the side.

Ooops - just joking darling - of course there's no one else.

Re. hybrid - I've cut holes in the passenger-side floor so 'er indoors can stick her legs through and provide some eco-KERS - except instead of electricity or flywheels, she works off chocolate. Organic, free-trade, free-range, eco-friendly, child-friendly chocolate, of course.

In my limited experience, I would think that the independent centres often attract those technicians who are more skilled with the older, classic, more desirable models. Equally, those models tend to be less electronic and gadget orientated. Hence my concern that OPC technicians are more experienced with the modern models such as 991, Panamera and Macans.

So whilst the OPCs would like their fair share of the 993 market, I just wonder whether the OPCs lose the edge, as their technicians, probably younger in age, may have less experience with a model which was new between 1993 and 1998.
