Servicing : OPC v. Independent ?

nemc

New member
I bought an Boxster (October 2000 Reg) in March of this year "" with only 12k on the clock.

It has been serviced at an OPC since new and now has done 19k. I am told that I need a 24k service and am considering the merits of an OPC v. independent. Given that the Porsche warranty runs out March 2006 (at which time I might consider extending it) which route should I take?? Would I lose some of the "goodwill factor" with my OPC if a problem occurs with my car eg. (RMS failure etc) should I decide to service it outside the network.

Furthermore, would service at an "˜independent' effect my recovery against the existing warranty if such need should arise?
Given the recent complaints from club members about the reasale value of Boxsters "" I intend to keep it for 3-4yrs.

Many thanks,

Neil Mc

Don't know for sure as i've not seen the small print in the extended warranty.

However, I would expect there to be some clause in it that ties you into using OPCs for the duration of the warranty. Once you are out of the warranty period and if you don't renew it, IMO it's down to personal preference as to taking it to an independent or an OPC. There are a number of recognised independents that get their praises sung regularly and are significantly cheaper than an OPC.

But, if you provide your own oil, an OPC service drops dramatically in price.

With such a low mileage, and that you intent to keep the car for a while, OPC servicing and renewing the OPC annual warranty, should see you right if anthing like RMS happens. I bought my 993 from an OPC last year - and any problems I've had were covered with goodwill.

You could also consider getting your car serviced by a recognised independant and buying a warranty from a source other than Porsche. The warranty on my Boxster cost far less than the Porsche one and covers the RMS.

Shall we separate SERVICING from REPAIRS.....

Servicing costs, if you supply your own oil, is not vastly different between OPC and Indy. It is also a prerequisite for the warranty (it is in my case anyway, cos I specifically asked).

When you get the long list of 'other items' pick and choose which ones you let the OPC carry out (the cheap ones) then book yourcar in with your favourite Indy for the big ones (usually the ones with the high labour charges). Obviously make sure the Indy warrants the work they carry out.

Has anyone used AMD Technik? I have been speaking to them re a 24 k service and they have advised:

"The 24K service for your Boxster is priced at £399+VAT including parts and labour. This is in full accordance with the Porsche service scheduling and uses only Porsche genuine parts.

For this service we can book you in next day and we would require your car here for a full day. The service includes:

Spark plug change
Oil and filter change
Air filter change
Pollen filter change
Brake and suspension inspection and fluid change
General vehicle inspection
Full diagnostic check on system tester[/LIST]
All our technicians are ex Porsche motorsport and are indeed fully Porsche trained. We are also happy to offer 10% discount to Porsche club members as well. It is also worth noting that as of next month we are offering 50% off remapping to Boxster owners in the Porsche club when booked with servicing."

If it includes the Plugs as well then that is more than the Porsche 24K service does...[:)]
Plugs should be changed every 4 years as I recall (having just had mine done at 4 years). More often is good, but costs a bit as well of course.

Other things to consider -
10 year anti-perforation check (needs to be checked every year or it's invalidated),
air-bag check (at 4 years)

And I'm sure there's more (thinking on my feet!)
