servicing query - OPC or independent?

My 997 Gen 2 is now two years old........the letter has arrived from the OPC and the service is due. Remarkably, I have never kept a 911 Porsche long enough to have it serviced, but times have changed!

I also have an older Cayenne and I used an independent Porsche specialist for that (Autowerke, in Norwich). They are excellent.

But with the 911, how essential is it to have a full OPC service history? Whilst no immediate plans to trade in for a new Porsche, the time will come no doubt - will the lack of an OPC history hit me at that point? Or is that an urban myth?

Does anyone have experience of this issue? I do not bother with extended warranties, so there is no warranty issue either way.

Funny old thing but mine went in today for it's first service too - to Exeter PC. Personally if were to buy a 2-8 year Porsche and I had the choice between one with a full PC service history and one with a collection of indies I know which one I would buy. That's not to say the indies don't do as good a job because I'm sure there are many that do but when you do come to sell I'm sure a full PC history will make a difference. However, if you want to save a few bob now............

So that would be it's first service then?
With that in mind it's never visited a dealership, so anything that needs updating has not been...[&:]
I'd certainly suggest a main dealer service and to be honest I personally wouldn't touch a 2 year old car that hadn't been main dealer serviced- not when it's that new, as mentioned if it were 5-8 years old then fair enough..

The big advantage of independents is their much more extensive knowledge of the older cars (OPCs just don't see enough of them to know the issues or appreciate their needs, at least not from my experience of OPCs) - the reverse is true for newer cars. I just can't see any indie having any significant experience of 997.2s (or even much of 997.1s).

And as already stated things like software updates won't be available outside the PC network.

Got me thinking as my car will need a 4 year service next Jan and was considering the indie route. Its had an OPC service at 2 years and the recall work done (fuel pump?). Would you guys be put off looking at 4 or 5 year old car that had opc then indie?

My opinion has always been to have services done absolutely 100% by Dealer Network in order to have (a) right updates done, and (b) a perfect service book for resale.

Other work I did myself (where possible) or with occasional indy where necessary and no-one would generally know. Had VAG-COM too in order to either guide the dealer or myself...

Yes an oil change on my drive would have been cheaper and just as 'good' but it would have knocked a good deal more off the residuals.

thanks all. I think that appears to be unanimous then! OPC it is.....
Yes, but if I were having the oil change done yearly the indy would get that work- apart from the fact I know my OPC would probably price match. [:)]
Building a good relation with the service team has worked well for me.. possibly not so with the sales team [&:]
