Servicing

Morning all. Got a quote yesterday from Reading OPC for a 48K service and new front discs and pads (I think they're warped). £1250! Slightly surprised at that, but they did tell me it wasn't actually a 48K service they would perform as that was done two years ago - previous owner was a low user and kept the stamps up. So, what do you think of the price, and should I, given the car is still just under 48K on the clock, even consider going Specialist rather than OPC at this stage (I was thinking Northway)? New (since April) owner. Absolutely love the car, but the Mrs is starting to get interested too and that's cutting into my driving time!

My last major service (48k interval at 96k) at the OPC cost over that amount without even going anywhere near the discs and pads.

Considering these cars are very labour intensive to work on, and the amount of work involved in a major service, that price isn't unreasonable. The pads and discs alone would be around £750 inc vat.

Guessing that they would charge around the £750 for the discs and pads, what sort of service are you getting for £500? Sounds like a 12k minor.... which involves oil change and filters, general checks, a quick wash and a cup of coffee.

In the next month I am looking at:

Before the Bedford trackday the work on the brakes and after that, and before my driving holiday in France, the rest.

Definite - 4 new tyres/new rear discs and pads/new front discs and pads/RSR silencers/24K service/4 wheel refurbishment/wheel alignment

Maybe - new clutch/new flywheel/new suspension

Thank God for credit cards is all I can say and I will not be going to an OPC for this lot.

Couple of months ago had the car seviced and discs, pads and brake sensors replaced all round with OEM items, total cost was approx £650. Not done at an OPC but the Porsche specialist I use.

Sounds like they are shafting you on labour rates and parts cost.

Hi

I would take it to a good independent - they work on 993's all the time, are more familiar with them and cost less..

Do Leeds give a discounted labour rate for older cars? Cambridge charge £75/hr rather than their usual £105..

Where was that? Sounds a good price. Anyone got anything to say about Northway's? I've heard they are well respected.

Erm, not sure I'm up to that - pretty likely to end up with a pile of spare bits and the car on bricks... Would the AA help in thoise circumstances?!

Not heard any bad reports on Ray Northway. Can definately recommend Steve Bull at Devizes. 40 minute drive from Porsche Reading and labour rates around £55/hour. Definately think any of the good specialists will look after your 993 with a higher level of understanding than an OPC. Most enthusiastic owners who know their way around the car and the good specialists that are out there would place good store by a book full of specialist service stamps. Specialists earn their living by their reputation and don't have the captive customer base the OPC has with cars under warranty. If they don't get it right the customer votes with his feet!

I had the same quandry when my 993 came up for service earlier in the year.

From the reading I did, my understanding of the servicing sequence is 6/12/6/24 (or I've also seen it as 12/24/12/48). Either way, it looks like your next service due is the "small" (i.e 6/12K, depending on which sequence you use) one.

I had the same problem with the brake fluid not having been done for a while so I had that done at the same time - it only cost £35 or so from the indie who did it for me. Worth getting it done in light of when your last recorded change was!

Brake fluid change is due.

The airbag inspection is a bit of a joke. It requires that you key on the ignition and check that the airbag light functions and then extinguishes within a few seconds. The next part is to visually inspect the airbag covers on the driver and passenger side to confirm there are no tears, rips or bulges.
