Servicing

Hi guys my 911 is due for a service in the the next few months. Unfortunatly its a major one so it might be quite a bit. My question is how much does a major service usually cost and is there anything i can do at home replacement wish to save a bit on labour?

Hi, My Indy charges £420 for the 24K service, includes plugs, all filters and oil etc[:D]

Actually major servicing on the 996 is extremely reasonable if you go to an independant. Considering most similar level performance cars cost £3000 or more for a major service. Looking at the bigger picture with history considered it's probably not worth DIY even if you're confident. You'd have to buy the kit to check fault codes and probably a specialist tool for doing the belts. Plus its not exactly an accesable engine bay. Most independants are about the same at around £1000 (so long as you don't need extras) and I chose Hartech because I'm not a very trusting fellow when it comes to garages and at least I know for sure they do the work and all the checks properly. I've had bad experiences before (like realising that a main dealer did not change the oil after a major service so) I'm certain that not all garages stick to the manual.

Quotes seem a little incongruous!!!! Have had two 24k services by independants - both were less than 1/3 of that - and no bad experiences.

The following is cut and pasted from OPC Bolton web site: Scheduled service pricing 911 C2, C4, C4S and Targa Minor service £360 Major service £540 Annual check £125 Change brake fluid £100 Please note: an annual check does not substitute a Major service. Prices are only valid in conjunction with a service. Servicing should be carried out in line with the intervals published in the vehicles Owner Manual and Service and Maintenance Manual. All prices include VAT. *Major service includes replacement of spark plugs. Try and negotiate the labour rate and also get the 10% discount for club members on the parts.

Maybe some confusion between Carrera and Turbo. The Major on a Turbo is much more expensive, as the spark plug change is a lengthy process.

Sorry, yes that was for rhe 48k (belts) service on a turbo.. But it was the same at all the places a checked.

Surely that must be plus extras? Otherwise who is your indy! With the few extras I had done (brake fluid, O2 sensor, set of coil packs) my 48k cost me over £1500.. to be honest I thought that was pretty good?!

Peter I nearly got caught out by the * and the "includes spark plugs". On the web site the * is near the price for the turbo and indicates that only the more expensive major turbo service includes the plugs. The £540 for the non-turbo cars doesn't include plugs. Mine had FPSH up to now but at 7 years old this year it just wasn't worth it. So mine went to an indy this week for a major service plus brake fluid plus MOT and the total was £279 as I supplied my own oil (Mobil 1 off eBay for about £50). The OPC would have wanted £540 + £100 for the brake fluid change + (£54 for the MOT elsewhere) so £700

Hi Andy Yes this is inclusive in the service. I had mine done a couple of weeks ago so I can vouch for it.

Peter, if you got the plugs included then you got a bargain. I had the conversion with Cambridge OPC when looking to book my service (went indy in the end) and they were of the same opinion as the web site which says they are not included. I just cropped the image below from the Porsche UK web site. The * for inclusive plugs are only on the major service prices for the GT3 and Turbo cars

I just had a 48k service from Parr's (Crawley) which included the plugs and the belts for just over 700 pounds. Their hourly rate is 85ph. Addspeed in Horsham charge 65ph, so it shows that shopping around can save a few quid!!! Martyn

I have just had my turbo serviced by Tony Wright it was the dreaded major at 40,000 ish it also had a cylinder leak down test and replaced the hydraulic clutch accumulator and a brake fluid change, parts, which included the air filter ,poly rib belt, spark plugs, pollen filter fuel filter, accumulator and brake fluid not all the parts are part og the "porsche" major service but as my car is a keeper they are done. i.e the poly rib belt is only an inspection,I had just had the oil changed 4 weeks earlier so he knocked £70 off total £704 then £140 dreaded VAT all in all very reasonable. accumulator was 93.31 plus vat Oh forgot to mention all parts are genuine porche
