Servicing

I know this has sort of been covered, bit can someone list the places and numbers i can get my 944 serviced around the greater Glasgow area? Independant and OPC.

I think i saw that there was a Indipendant in Edinburgh too, does anyone have the details? I have heard that he is pretty good.

Who is best? I read the post about Geo Moris people talking about unesessary work, i also spoke to a guy who uses him and he said a similar thing, but suggested that G.M. was abit of a perfectionest and wanted to really keep the cars he services in good order. Hence replacing thigs sooner rathe than later.

I wish i stayed closer to Hartech would make things alot easier!!

What am i looking at for labour rates?

All opinions welcome the more the better thanks.[:)]

This topic has been answered before ,here is a note off some guys. Geo Morrison 0141 643 1768. Brian Millar 0131 433 7806 Motor Tune Shotts 01501 822 247 OPC 0141 943 1155 I have used them all over the years . All are good work a deal your self on costs Brian ro 1

Also Lorimar & Findlay in Whiteinch (where the minicentre used to be). I've never used them but they now advertise in Porsche Post. R.P.M has also been talked about in the past. They are beside Maryhill train station in a small industrial unit. Again, never used them.

Let us know how you get on cos I think feedback in these areas in terms of cost and quality is invaluable. FWIW I still use the OPC cos my car has always been serviced there. The more I think about it, the more I'm considering doing the drive to one of the English based places. 9Meister has, in particular, impressed me with there range of products and good customer feedback.

Will do, i just got my 944 so i am going to take it in to get a Condition Survey done on it. It was last serviced by an OPC 2k miles ago and it was £1500 so its in very good nick.

Will prob try Geo Moris as he is closest.

You are right, there really should be more info on servicing our cars. Most importantly a good independant who carse about your car and doesnt chage £100 per hour (even i dont earn that..lols).

I am going to see if i can get it booked in on Sat so it depends on who is available..

I've had my car off the road for about three months with first gearbox then major engine work and the guy I would recommend is Peter McCanna at Shotts-a bit out of the way but he charges £30 an hour and does know his stuff, you might have to push him if there are time deadlines on getting your car back-mine had been in for nine weeks but problem was a bit unique,

£30 is prob a fair price (as long as he doesnt take 3 times as long to do things [;)])

I have booked it into Glenvarigill for a Condition survey £105 + VAT which is ok i suppose. But they were quoting me £450 for the Annual service. To be honest that sound abit steep to say the lest, he said yes but we use Mobil 1 oil.. Yes well i can buy that out of halfords for £32 for 4.5l

I expect an Indipendanct to be about 1/2 of the cost of OPC, what do you think? Do you find that the independants will follow the service as stated in the book and do all the checks required?

I would suggest that the independants will know more about your car than the OPC!!! Also, £450 is an absolute nonsense for a 15 year old car. Mobil 1 is generally seen as too thin an oil for an engine of that age, so that "quote" by Glenvarigill is probably irrelevent.
You should be looking at something in the region of £250 for an annual service inspection, by the likes of Peter McAnna or Brian Miller.
Are you happy with your new car, then?? [:D]

Yes very much, i have a list of about 20 wee things i want to get done. Not least it needs new rear tyres and the front wheels need balanced immediately, over 110mpg you get really bad vibration.
The interior is in fantastic condition, i might get a leather specialist to get the seats up to top condition, they are superb right now, but have the usual cracks n stuff.

I am fitting a new dump valve at the weekend and will be getting the Guru racing kit soon hopefully. Its going to be a wee hobby for me anyway, so I will prob do lots of wee bits myself.

I cant wait till the summer months, to get the most from the handling, had the tail out a bit already, which is great fun, and makes a big change from front wheel drive.

The lever arm on the hatch release servo is missing, so I will have to source that If I want to get in and out the boot without a hernia!!
Looking forward to meeting up with some of the other Scottish guys.

I agree with Derek, £450 for what is little more than an oil change is crazy. Check the service work sheet, and you will find that changing the oil and filter is about the only real WORK that gets carried out. The rest of it is largely just visual checks, which most enthusiast owners do anyway. And of course if they do spot anything, you will be persuaded to let them fix it at OPC rates.

Also, the average OPC technician these days probably knows very little about cars of the 944 vintage, as mostly they will only ever work on 996's and Boxsters. Frankly, you would be almost as well taking it to any competent small garage.

Glenvargil charge me about £420ish for my service. That includes the bucket loads of oil needed in these aircooled engines. I still think its too expensive but George Morrison quoted a bigger price last time I asked[8|]

The £450 is for the 12k service so I assume that includes plugs air filter and a few other sundry items, but you are totally correct, nothing worth £450.

To be honest I think most of these cars are over serviced with not really any benefit. An oil change every 6000miles is fine, but I really doubt you are getting the benift of the fancy oils that can clearly go for a lot longer. You are talking up to 20k miles these days.

I would be happy with something like Magnatec or other good semi synthetic oil.

My car over the past 6 years has only done 20k miles and has been serviced 5 times by an OPC with a total cost of £3100. Not that I am complaining as its clearly been looked after. Sounds like Peter McAnna at Motor Tune might be the chap to use, its abit out the way but that's always worth it to get someone who is good and more importantly someone you can trust.

I have used Peter at Motortune in Shotts for the last 3 Years,
have found him to be very good and also extremely fair to deal with.
He now looks after 5 or 6 cars for me and my family.
Would recommend him highly

Cheers Alan

Thats good news, i will give him a call. Cheers
