shall i get an s2

hello there i have owned a 944 1984 2.5 lux for 6 months now and i want a change. I have spent a fortune on the car with new wheels/ clutch/ belts and rollers/ performance exhaust/ zymol/ fuel pump and just about everything else you can think off. But my need for speed is more than my desire to make this car perfect, so i am thinking about getting an s2 1991 on a J plate in guards red, leather electric seats. just done 90K and turbo 17wheels, (mint) (£7995). shall i make the change???? or shall i just keep perfecting the LUX??? please let me know. oh and the LUX is for sale £4000 if anyone wants it?? i have spent 3K on it and it cost me 3k only 6 months ago, bargin for someone???

If you're going to go to the trouble and expense of changing your Lux for an S2, why not get a nice cabrio? [;)]

But my need for speed is more than my desire to make this car perfect,

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I had a fabulous Lux, it was almost perfect in every way, aside a cosmetic dent in the front wing. With just a little more effort (and the dent sorted) it could have been a concourse car.

All was rosey until I followed a 944 Turbo to Leeds for an event. The difference in power was spectacular and my previously much loved Lux was then inadequate. I had to have a Turbo and after that I didn't want to do anything with the Lux, suddenly it was just spending good money after bad.

So I bought a Turbo and sold the Lux. The Lux was in far better condition and, as with you, I had spent on everything that was, or might have, gone wrong.

At the end of the day however, at road legal speeds the Turbo is little better. Obviously the Turbo it is faster, though in trueth I've only seen 120 out of the Turbo but 125 out of the Lux. The Turbo is quicker, but not to 30 mph because of lag an a notchy gearbox.

So I got rid of an excellent car and bought one which is adequate. OK so the Turbo does give me a grin when it goes whoosh and, when I didn't necessarily have the power to stop a warm hatch pushing me on a duel carrigeway in the Lux (well up to 100 anyway), the Turbo makes them look very very silly. But I still miss my Lux.

Several I know have both Turbos and Lux or S's and enjoy both. I couldn't accomodate or afford both but I still miss my Lux.

The moral of this story? The Lux is a very, very good car. If you have a nice one try to stick with it, the S2 might not be that much better in real world (legal) conditions and many not be in as good nick.

In retrospect to my above comment my Lux and Turbo were both 88 cars, and I sold the Lux for near enough the same as I bought the Turbo, so perhaps I'm being a bit unfair on BKE my Turbot.

You are looking at going from a much older car to a much younger one so, obviously, the later car is going to be better.

Please disregard all of my previous comments [;)]

I wrote off my S2 Cab last year on black ice and have subsequently tried a LUX and a Turbo. The difference to someone who isn't doing red line driving isn't that great, but what you will see with the S2 is a level increase of power right the way through the range, whereas with the Turbo, you get the generic "lag", then the burst of power you expect from a turbo. I loved my S2, but wanted to try a 911 which is a completely different driving experience.

Good luck in what yoiu decide.

Regards

Phil

....or an alternative viewpoint:

If your Lux is mechanically sound and cosmetically perfect, why not keep it and bolt on a Level2 Supercharger from www.speedforceracing.com for £3500 for 250bhp at crank (or 222 at wheels)

The Level1 is £3000 for 209bhp (182 at wheels)

thanks for all your help i have advertised the car and we will see what happens i would really like and s2 as i have just raced one on my way to harrogate and it thrashed me so from that angle i need one. as regards a turbo i dont think i could afford the car and the upkeep, but what may end up happening is the lux wont sell and i will have to get an s2 aswell and have 2!!! would that not be a happy day to open your garage and say "what shall i take today??" i will keep you posted on what happens. and here is the pic i have used in the add look at the difference to the one on the left of the screen, i said i had been hard at work!!

Supercharging is fun !
Lots of power, no lag, drives like a normal (aspirated) car, confuses the others.

OK, so I speak from 911 experience, but....

Little experience so can only speak from being an S2 owner on a late 92 K with 130k on the clock, owned the car for 10 ish months and love the experience especially the torque and the progressive/smooth increase in power through the rev range, got to admit your S looks the part and personally I would stick with what you have unless the need for an S2 has grabbed you by the proverbials and is unwilling to let go [8D]

Whatever choice you make , you have the best car Porsche has ever produced in the 944 anyway so hey you carnt go wrong[;)]

That is an excellent pic Oliver. Not only is the shine pronounced and the wheels much better, but the stripes on the lawn really present the car nicely. Good luck with your sale and subsequent hunt for an S2 [:)]
