She let me down - bad misfires and pressure through the coolant tank

:(

Started her up this morning, defrosted no problems - drove 0.5 of a mile down the road and massive misfires and car stalls..

Pull over lucky by a lay-by and try starting her again, massive misfile again and wont stay running at all...

Call RAC!

Rac came - started up - ran ok for a min then massive misfiles again..:(

RAC man unable to diagnose so flat bet to GT One in Chertsey..

Just had a call from them asking the following:
"Have you noticed the massive amounts of pressure coming back through the coolant system and out the expansion tank!"

- Nope...

Great - what does that mean - suspect head gasket!.

They are going to diagnose properly but doesn't look good does it..

Crazy thing was that the car will now actually run without misfiring, but I suspect that if it gets to running temp it would do the same again..

I have a feeling this is going to cost BIG BUCKS!

Sorry to say, but I'd be with GTOne in their diagnosis.

What model of 944 is it? The 2.7 lux in your sig, I'm guessing.

Yip

2.7 Lux 1989 with 83K on the clock..

Doesn't sound good. The head gasket in your car is probably over 20 years old, and the next one will last 20 years. Just a shame it's failed in your time with the car! [&o]

That's what GT One said - it will have failed due to age - nothing else really...

So - lets guess at the cost for GT One to do the job?????

Headgasket on an eight valve is not a terrible job, the kit is around £120, so unless other parts need doing or there are more serious issues I wouldn't panic too much.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE..

lol

Well - just had a long chat with GT One (got to say these guys are A1...).. Initial thought of the head gasket failing turned out to not be the case *happy face*.. I think I slightly over exagerated his initial call to me as I had visions of coolant poring out the expansion tank... that was actually where it needs a new cap and it was a slight dribble.... lol.

So - GT One had plugs out - leads off - cap and arm off - all apparently in tip top condition. Craig then put an endoscope down the engine to check stuff (he did list what but got kind of confused [;)]), but one thing I remember him saying was checking for coolant traces. Result - all fine - and all in very good condition too apparently *happy face again*..

So - actual diagnoses.. Speed and reference sensors....?? Craig did explain to me what they were, how you get to them and what they did - TBH this was the first I had heard of them..lol

So, both sensors being replaced and i'm very happy again!!..

I have to say that the guys at GT One are true professionals.. they could have just done the head gasket and also said you needed the sensors etc and took the money, but they took the extra time in diag and ruled that out.. Proper job, no rip off, no over charging, and the knowledge these guys have is second to none (I think!) [:D]

So there we go.

Thats good to hear, glad you have found a garage you can trust, its not always that easy unfortunately...

Er this sounds all to familiar - have you nicked my car!!! [8D]

I picked mine up from GT One last saturday after it had been in for an MOT.

It passed the MOT with flying colours but I asked them to see why she was chucking out about a litre of water from the expansion tank after each journey and why there was a hot start issue and an occassional mis-fire even with a new relay .

The water was traced back to a faulty thermostat fitted when the pump and belts where done and the hot start was diagnosed as the ECU, which they've replaced.

As you say, their work was thorough and investigative, not jumping to conclusions, worth the money.

PS I know you haven't got my car as I drove her into work today, but yet to be spotted though......[:(]

bit of an update...

Since having the 'Speed and reference sensors' replaced - she hasn't skipped a single beat! [:)]

also - on a real plus - I am getting slightly better MPG........

Used to get about 250 miles to a tank(ish) - but since the sensors change - I have done 180 miles and its on half a tank... not sure if this is coincidental, or because the weather is warming up (which defo makes a difference) - but my driving style certainly hasnt changed [;)] and neither has my daily journey.

Dam I love this car - hehe

Fantastic result Ant [:)][:)][:)]

A few people have had problems with those sensors over the years so you're not alone. Now just get out there and drive her! [:D]

this is worryingly common failure . I had the same thing happen with mu Lux.

Took it in for a MOT and it came back with the head gasket blown .

I suspect that a lot of garages leave the engine running on cars during inspection for half an hour or more . If your temperature sensor isn't working properly the car will soon overheat if the electric fans don't cut in.
Quite often the fan fuse gets removed because the fan runs on and flattens the battery after switch off. If the fuse is not replaced it will soon cook when stationary .
