Sheared Wing Mirror Spring Bolt

Can someone help me ? 1988 3.2 Cab.
Having sheared the wing mirror housing bolt ( female end) folding my mirriors to puit my cover on ofr the winter I have established that I need to replace the housing but cannot work out how to remove the housing part of the wing mirror from the main body of the mirror. I have the mirror off the car hanging on the wire but presume there is a way to get the actual glass and motor out of the housing to gain access to unbolt the part that needs replacing and disconect the wires.

Haynes manual is hopeless as does not even refer to wing mirrors.

Can anyone offer some help.

thats a difficult one to do and an even more difficult one to describe. The mirror is held in by a cam on an annular ring. Look up under the bottom of the mirror and you should be able to see a small tang. This needs to be moved / rotated to release the mirror.

If its like the tear drop mirror you need to pivot the glass and then turn the plastic ring that holds the glass to the mechanism through about 1/8th of a turn.

You'll have some fun with this. Richard's right about rotating the tang. That's what the manual says. In practise it's not usually that straightforward as the screwdriver has limited purchase in the recess and it's not easy to turn. Sometimes the tang has been burred by someone else's efforts. As an alternative you can just undo the three bolts that hold the motor etc to the housing by inserting a thin spanner between the mirror glass and the housing. If you push the glass in at one end you can see the bolt heads, two at one end, the one at the other is just visible/accessible if you push the glass in at the opposite end. You'll need plenty of patience though and it's easy to crack the glass if you're too enthusiastic. Hang a sheet over the car door to prevent any scratching.

I've got a few scrap mirrors, if you let me know which parts you need you can have them for the price of the postage.
 
Thanks to all of the help given on this.
I managed to not only remove everyhting but fix it there and then and re-fit as bolt had only sheared the first thread and was fine for the rest.

I would suggest to you guys that for the sake of undoing an allen bolt, that it is worthwile checking every few months that the spring loaded bolt is not undoing especially if you fold you mirrors as I do to fit a cover. This definatkey undoes the bolt a slight amount each time.
