Have been using Shell Optimax on my 933 for a while but dropped into my local shell this weekend and seems there is now a VMAX branded fuel. Is this same thing? Could see Optimax branding everywhere in station but only VMAX on pumps. Assumed same thing but on pulling hose led on pump indicated 96.8 octane only - Optimax obviously 98. Guys at desk couldnt help re confirmation of octane. Grateful for feedback - hopefully to confirm VMAX is now my new fuel?

Shell Optimax = VMAX?

Sure it wasn't 96.8p per litre indicated on the pump...?

99 ron it is ...I do not wish to steal the thread however in the literature I have from Shell it says V-Power includes "Friction Modification Technology (FMT)"...I seem to recall a previous Shell super fuel .. I think it was called Formula Shell ....which had friction reducing properties which ultimately alledgedly caused engine damage...what is this new stuff and does it have any relationship to the old friction reducing stuff ....appreciate your views ??

How about the world's most consistent form of bull***t (i.e. from the Shell site)... QUOTE:
"We are delighted that Shell has harnessed the technology that's fuelled our Formula One cars to develop a new unleaded petrol for the road which is designed to be more responsive. I think motorists will relish the control and power that Shell Optimax can give them."
Goodness, I must fill up with it soon, otherwise I will not relish the control (?) and power of my poor little sports car!

Just spoke to Shell Customer Services UK:-
Friction Modification Technology (FMT) has a Higher Level of detergent to clear out the engine.
V-Power and Optimax levels are higher than Shells standard unleaded 95 Ron fuel.
Optimax (98 Ron) had 2.5 times the level of detergent than the "Standard Unleaded Fuel".
V-Power has 4 times the level of detergent than the "Standard Unleaded Fuel""¦ I am currently awaiting a response as to the amount of detergent resident in "Standard Unleaded Fuel" so I can do my sums properly.
The UK has 99 Ron V-Power Fuel whereas Europe has 100 Ron V-Power Fuel "" Shell Market research decided that on the whole the "˜99 Ron' package would be better suited to UK driving. Hmmm, I wonder where that market research was made and how many drivers they quizzed.

V-Power has been around Europe for a good few years now albeit in 100RON form and I'm not aware of a sudden increase in engine failures. In fact alot of my mates who have driven alot in Europe have always raved on about V-Power, complaining that we can't get it in this country.
I struggle to understand why everyone has gone RON-mad. Very few cars you can buy can acutally get the extra benefit of RON's over 98 as the ECU's are optimised for 98RON fuel. Unless you re-map your ECU you are not gettng any extra benefit - apart from maybe guaranteeing you actually have 98RON fuel in your tank by the time the fuel has been diluted in the distribution network.

Sorry, do not wish to scaremonger but I have used Optimax for some time and will use V-power however I am a little concerned when I read FMT is included in the fuel ...really do not want it to stand for F'ing Much Trouble .......better fuel, cleaner fuel etc etc we have been here before.
Thought the guys on here could reassure everyone the fuel is perfectly safe....

This is what I got from Shell: & to see the fact sheet they sent me as an attachment go to:
http://www.quenya.demon.co.uk/Shell_V-Power_Unleaded_2006_Info_Spec_Sheet2.pdf
I have yet to get written confirmation from Porsche UK, HQ Reading that it is safe, however they have told me over the telephone that it is and that the 993 is design to run on fuel from 91 Ron up.

Thank you for your recent call regarding Shell fuels. Please find attached the Product Information sheet containing all the technical information relating to V-Power. In response to your query regarding the quantity of detergents in standard Shell Unleaded; Shell Unleaded uses a different additive package to V-Power, but the detergent chemistry is the same. V-Power contains 4 times the dose rate, or potency level, of Unleaded. The exact details of these quantities are confidential information. What we can say is that the additive formulation in V-Power has undergone rigorous testing within our laboratories and has been in use in a number of countries for some time without cause for concern. I hope this answers your query. Kind regards, Mike Higson

Just returned from round trip to Austria in my 993. In the mountain village I was staying at V-Power was shown as 100 octane. Subsequent stops the octane varied according to how far the station was from major centres. Mostly V-Power shown as 98 octane at these sites. Companies do have reciprocal supply arrangements so it may be the supply source has someting to do with the variation. As to the UK I have yet to fill locally. BP Ultimate was shown recently to give better power and torque outputs when independently tested back to back with Shell, Tesco etc. Trouble is locally it has been between 5p and 10p per litre more expensive. So Shell it is for me. Reading the threads I probably have the cleanest engine internals in Britain. Can't say I noticed a marked difference in performance but the car did go very well. Especially over 110mph, it felt it was sucked down onto the tarmac waiting to really fly. What a joy. The car returned 27 mpg for the round trip, average fuel cost 95p per gallon eqivalent.

Hi,
Shell V-Power has a different octane rating in each country depending on the local market preference (I believe the Germans like high octane rated fuels)
I'm not sure of the position in other countries, but Optimax was only made at the Shell refinery, and was not part of any reciprocal arrangements with other companies
I put my first tank of V-Power in this week, and subjectively it feels better, but that may be the placebo effect - I need to get someone else to fill it up and test it blind to see if I can tell the difference then []
Cheers
