For the past few weeks my little car has been living at Promax Motorsport health clinic, she was in very poor health with some very bad habits. A detox along with some health and fitness training was very much required.
First of all we saw the install of a new Cometic MLS headgasket, and If i'm to believe a thread on Rennlist these will are not being manufactured anymore.
The valve stem oil seals needed replacing as she smelt very bad in the morning with smoke.
The belts had been changed about 2 years ago but since then the balance shaft oil seals had leaked and a balance shaft sheath had worn very low along with front crank seal leaking, this had been replace at the same time too. These leaks took their toll and contaminated the belts so new ones fitted and tensioned correctly.
2 new fuel injectors were installed as the previous ones broke on removal.
A new ignition tuneup kit was installed to bring that bit of spark back into her life, new plugs leads, rotor and dizzy.
A while ago she was given a little run on Jamsport Dyno where it first became apparent of her poor health, very strong initial curves were produced but she wheezed when things started to get exciting, the wastegate was very weak and needed retiring. Peak performance was shown at 220 bhp and 278 lb/ft torque. Now she sports a shiney red Lindsey Racing dual port wastegate being kept in check by a Greddy PROFEC B II electronic boost controller.
Her attitude has had the ProMax treatment too with level 2 chips installed.
In order for her to be able to contain the new power and maybe future upgrades, a new clutch was in order. The previous one was very heavy and showing signs of wear. According to the history she had done very well to keep the origonal clutch to 155K miles. A new SPEC stage 2 sits as a replacement and clutching to a new lightened flywheel.
A previous MOT had noted corrosion of the fuel and brake lines, so whilst the clutch was out and rear beam down, brand new feed and return lines were fitted.
To celebrate this new lease of life I bought her a set of new shoes and discs for her hind quaters, very shiney they look too.
From what I hear, the old girl put up a major fight at first, refusing to let go of her equipment/habits. Perseverence by ProMax soon got her into shape again and was delivered back to me last night.
I took her out for a little spin for about an hour, much more lively with eagerness starting at 2800-3000 rpm and lasts right up to the red line, this was at the LO setting on the Profec, I haven't tried the HI setting yet. I am told the clutch judder when starting off will gradually go away, it isn't too bad just need to remember to leave a bit of space infront when in a queue. Other gears select very swiftly and smoothly.
The clutch feel is much lighter and I'm sure she will be more freindly to my wife in the future.
Power delivery is much smoother but very very strong - much more torque.
The next stops will be for a power run at a dyno just to see how well she is performing. New suspension is required too and maybe lowering. MAF could be on the cards too but all this work has given the wallet a good beating and so will have to wait.
