Shift rod coupling

Told you there would be more......third gear can sometimes be very hard to find and often crunches when trying to find it.....it's been suggested that the shift rod coupling may need replacing.....is it an easy job with access via inspection panel in front of the rear seats??

I also have a lot of play on the gear stick (in all gears)....can this be fixed???

Dont worry replacing the gear shifter coupler is very easy and quick, however its takes alittle to get the alinement right, tricky but not hard. Took me 20 minutes on friday after work.

This was the sight that greated me when I had a look at why my gears decided they didnt want to play. Note the lack of bushes.
I got my couplier from "Type 911", it only took a couple of days to arrive. £62.00 plus vat and carrige.

Ive had a look at my coupling today and, unlike in the pic above, it appears to have all the bushes.....what now ?

Hi The bushes may be worn they should only have a little movement! I think you can get them from Nick Moss. also check the bush at the bottom of the gear lever. Berny.

Unfortunately from your description it doesn't sound like the bushes to me, Replace before you go any further as they are relatively cheap. However from your description it sound more like your gear box itself, as the bushes would affect all the gears not just third.

Replace all of the bushes in the gear change linkage - the one at the bottom of the gear lever, the one in the 'sliding ring'/support that the shift rod passes through & the two in the coupler - then adjust the coupler position.

In the vast majority of cases doing this will solve your gear change problems & make a huge difference to the 'feel' of the change.

Bushes are available from many outlets like Roger Bray, etc:

Check the shift rod, the tip on mine had come loose and had to be re tacked, re newed nylon cup and bush at the gear lever end , fitted a wevo coupler at the other end, adjusted the clutch . Difference the car went from being a nightmare to drive to a complete pleasure.
All possible slop removed.
