Hi all, I think I might know what my problem is but just wanted some confirmation and advice.
2000 2.7 tip with 80k smoking like crazy on start up in the morning and at the end of the day when I return home from work, little bit at other times depends how long I leave it to sit. Now I know the flat six is prone to a little smoke at start up but we are talking embarrassing levels here. No smoke during driving or on overrun, I'm thinking possible AOS, any thoughts/advice appreciated.

ps is there a way of bypassing the AOS to confirm diagnosis?

Sounds suspiciously like a failed AOS Tim, especially if you're getting large volumes of white-coloured smoke.

Typically, you'll find it difficult to remove the oil cap when the engine is running due to the high crankcase vacuum created.

If it is the AOS I'd get it looked at ASAP since oil in the intake system can cause plug fouling and, worse, damage the cat converters.

Cheers Motorhead, its in for a service next week I might enquire the price of the parts, or maybe the cost of Porsche Centre doing the work. They are now charging £265 for a minor service which was cheaper than my indie, wondering if this reasonableness would transfer to other work.

For a 986 I think that the AOS is about £70+VAT (if you were a Club Member you'd get a 10% discount!).

But don't forget that the PC will charge you labour at about £125/hour to fit it.

The AOS for a 99-02 986 is £68.83 +VAT, and the book time for changing it is 0.8 hours, plus removal of engine cover.

For some strange reason, the AOS on the 03- cars are £49.92.

Many thanks gentlemen, I have temporarily removed the AOS tube from the intake and plugged it (at the intake) just to confirm this is the problem, hopefully the smoke will gradually reduce over the week.

Update, so the smoking subsided after disconnecting the AOS so while getting a service I got my OPC to change it. You were spot on Richard, about 80 quid plus labour.
