Shock pan / guard rubbing in the wet

On a 987.2 Cayman S: Just wondering if anyone's experienced this before? I get an awful creaking / rubbing noise when moving the steering wheel. After investigating, it's the shock pan / guard that's moving slightly on steering lock and the wet makes this audible. I've had the alignment tested and that's all fine.

Would a bit of grease help or is the a sign of something worse?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe

This sounds similar to the noise I'm experiencing as well. Coould you elaborate please on where you think this is coming from. I'm not sure what a shock (pan) is ?

Help appreciated

Many thanks

Steve

So this isn't quite right, as it's a modified Cayman, but it's the rubber doughnut that sits under the spring. When I turn the wheel, the doughnut / pan / guard (no idea of it's actual name), rotates. When it's dry, you can't hear anything, but when it gets wet you can really hear it as it rotates.

Joe,

You could try squirting some washing-up liquid in there to act as a lubricant, although any benefits may be temporary.

That might cure the squeak, but he’ll get bubbles coming out of the front arches in heavy rain [:D][:D]

I'd rather use something a bit longer lasting, such as silicone grease; I just want to be sure it's not going to attack the plastic / rubber of the guard and shock.

" the doughnut / pan / guard (no idea of it's actual name) " ... `Bump Stop`

Check that it is `fixed` to the spring `cup` ...

Thought the bump stop lives inside the damper, no?

It may in other applications but in this and most others I know of it sits over the top of the damper; such that in a full compression the bump stop hits the top mount, to protect the top of the damper.

Hey Steve, did you get anywhere? I've filmed it to get the magnitude of the noise. Top mounts were just replaced under warranty.

Washing up liquid also contains salt, and will start rusting in that area possibly.
